It’s almost time to head back into the Danger Zone.

2020 marks the return of Tom Cruise’s Maverick in Top Gun: Maverick and Jon Hamm is along for the ride in the Joseph Kosinski-directed sequel. While speaking to the Mad Men star at the world premiere of his new TV show, Amazon’s Good Omens, Hamm spilled some tea to Collider on what fans can expect from the sequel that’s been 34 years in the making.

“They’re using some technology on this that is never before seen. We’re shooting the movie in, I think, 6K. So it’s incredibly hi-def. The aerial footage is mind-blowing,” Hamm revealed.

He also praised the film’s commitment to doing the film’s action set pieces in camera: “It’s mostly practical. There’s not a lot of CG. Those guys are really up in planes and getting thrown around in multiple Gs.”

Tony Scott’s 1986 original film is one of Hollywood’s most iconic. Its fans are legion, and we can count Hamm among their numbers. Even Don Draper felt all the nostalgia walking onto the film’s sets — some of which directly called back (obviously) to those from the first movie.

“It’s a very strange experience, but it’s been a wonderful experience as well. It’s basically getting the whole team back together … I think it’s gonna be, for the people who love the first movie, I think it’s gonna’ be very interesting to watch. It very much takes the story in a different direction. But I think for the new fans, it’s gonna be something very cool, too. I’ve seen some of the footage — it is out of this world.”

In addition to Cruise and Hamm, Maverick also features Val Kilmer reprising his role of Mav’s rival pilot-turned-wingman anytime, Iceman. The film also re-teams Cruise with Mission: Impossible – Fallout writer and director Christopher McQuarrie, who did some rewrites on the film.

Fans have waited almost 40 years to watch their favorite cocky pilot take to the skies once again, and they’ll finally get a chance to see it when Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters June 26, 2020.
