An action epic based on a true story, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy tells the biographic tale of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy, an Indian chieftain who revolted against the oppressive East India Company a full decade before the infamous Sepoy Mutiny. Reddy deployed guerilla warfare tactics, raiding British Army camps and disrupting supplies. The British Army put a 10,000 rupee bounty on his head and still could not catch him despite planting moles in his ranks. Finally, they went after his family and caught him when he went to rescue his family. Anyone who loves action epics and anything historical is bound to be into this one.

2. ‘War’

War pits two well-known Indian action stars, Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff, in a massive showdown against each other. It’s being touted as the biggest Hindi-language action entertainer of the year as both actors and their stuntmen pull off “never-seen-before, death-defying action stunts that will keep you on the edge of your seats.” The story revolves around the fraught relationship between Khalid (Shroff) and his mentor, Kabir (Roshan), a former soldier who mentored Khalid. When Kabir goes rogue, Khalid is tasked with stopping his former mentor, leading to an epic showdown between the two. Again, these are two of the biggest action stars working in Indian cinema, so if you’re a fan of huge action set pieces and spectacle, this is definitely a movie for you to check out.

3. ‘Lootcase’

Release Date: October 4

Country: India

Director: Lijo Jose Pellissery

Cast: Sabumon Abdusamad, Chemban Vinod Jose, Antony Varghese

If you want to see one film unlike any other on this list, see Jallikattu. The Malayalam-language film recently played at Fantastic Fest to divisive – but never lukewarm – reactions. The plot itself is incredibly simple: A water buffalo escapes from the butcher’s shop one day and runs rampant through a remote, rural Indian village. The tiny village descends into chaos and anarchy as everyone rushes to claim the bull for themselves, pitchforks, torches, and rocks armed and ready to be turned against their neighbor. Yes, the buffalo’s rampage destroys the wooden village, but it’s less about the breakdown of physical structures than it is about the breakdown of society. And oh, wow, is it beautifully shot. If you want a film that will linger with you for a while, you’ll want to see this one when it hits theaters.

4. ‘One Piece: Stampede’

Release Date: October 24

Country: Japan

Director: Takashi Otsuka

Cast: Ikue Ôtani, Mayumi Tanaka, Kappei Yamaguchi, Kazuya Nakai, Hiroaki Hirata, Kazuki Yao, Akemi Okamura, Chô, Kanae Itô, Yukiko Yamaguchi

Based on the One Piece manga, One Piece: Stampede is a Japanese action-fantasy animated movie directed by Takashi Otsuka and produced by Toei Animation. It is the fourteenth feature film of the One Piece film series, and this one is special as it’s commemorating the anime’s 20th anniversary. The story is a spinoff of the main series, this time following the Straw Hat Pirate gang as they get invited to a star pirate expo. It’s the best-selling manga series of all time, so if you’re looking to dip your toes into anime and aren’t sure where to begin, this might be the perfect place to start.

5. ‘Housefull 4’

Release Date: October 25

Country: India

Director: Farhad Samji

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Kriti Sanon, Kriti Kharbanda, Pooja Hegde, Boman Irani, Zoha Rahman, Rana Daggubati, Riteish Deshmukh, Nana Patekar

Touted as a “reincarnation comedy” – yes, you read that right – Housefull 4 is sure to be a good time at the movies with plenty of laughs. Six lovers are parted due to a vengeful conspiracy plot in the year of 1419. Reincarnated and reunited 500 years later in 2019, the three men are about to make an epic mistake – the timeline has gotten screwed up and they’re all accidentally about to marry their former sisters-in-law instead of their soulmates. Will they remember their past lives in time to make the switch and marry the girl they were supposed to in the first place? Or will they be stuck with the wrong woman forever? A rollicking rom-com with plenty of music, this one looks to be hugely entertaining slapstick.
