It took over 20 years, but Titanic was finally dethroned at the box office. By the Avengers.

In honor of Avengers: Endgame passing James Cameron’s Oscar-winning epic to become the second-highest grossing movie of all time with $2 billion worldwide (and climbing), the director congratulated Marvel and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes with this cool, custom image:

Cameron still has the number one movie of all time — Avatar — and Titanic‘s 11 Oscars (including one for Best Picture). At the same time, given the recent surge of Hollywood’s output of tentpoles, it’s shocking that Titanic reigned at #2 for 22 years. The Top 10 movies of all-time contain eight films from the 2010s; the only two not from that time are Cameron’s blockbusters.

Like EndgameTitanic is a wholly unique success story, the likes of which we may never see again. Plagued with bad buzz prior to its December 1997 release, the movie infamously went over budget and over-schedule, missing its planned July 1997 release date. Cameron overcame that by opening in the top spot opening weekend and staying there for four months straight — a feat that is completely unheard of and unmatched by any movie since. (Hilariously, 1998’s Lost In Space was the movie that finally knocked Titanic off its perch.)

Endgame currently sits at just shy of $2.2 billion at the global box office. Some Hollywood pundits believe it could eclipse Avatar‘s worldwide haul. If so, we’ll see another one of these images from Cameron and his friends from Pandora.
