5 Fan Theories About Captain Marvel And 'Avengers: Endgame' |

There are only a few weeks left until the premiere of Captain Marvel on March 8th (International Women’s Day!) and to say this film is eagerly-awaited would be putting it mildly. Since the gut-wrenching finale of Avengers: Infinity War and the promise of Captain Marvel’s, a.k.a. Carol Danvers, arrival in Infinity War’s post-credits scene, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been beyond keen to see how one of the most beloved female superheroes will figure into the MCU — especially because Captain Marvel is going to be the face of the MCU’s Phase Four and, as such, will become of the primary superheroes when old favorites like Captain America and Iron Man eventually leave the scene.

Captain Marvel will take viewers back to the early ‘90s as we follow Carol, now a Kree soldier leading the charge in the battle against the Skrulls, as she attempts to unlock memories about her human past. She is joined by a two-eyed Nick Fury and her trusty cat, Goose, and together, this trio fights against the Skrulls, who have made their way to Earth.

There’s a lot to get excited about with Captain Marvel but these fan theories (which we found particularly intriguing and worth talking about) give us some food for thought as to how the events of Captain Marvel will play out and how Carol will be incorporated into the MCU at large. Just what kind of impact will she have on Avengers: Endgame? Let’s speculate.

1. Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Will Be Involved

Take this theory with a grain of salt but Captain Marvel might have ties to Iron Man 2 and The Avengers if Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. figures into it at all. First noted by Screen Rant, if you look at the IMDb for Captain Marvel’s cast, you’ll see that there aren’t a ton of character names listed. But one character that is listed is the character played by actor Mel Powell: Pegasus Guard Ficke. If this turns out to be true and P.E.G.A.S.U.S., a secret initiative that looks into alternative forms of energy and in the comics was a target for the Skrulls (who are the main villains in Captain Marvel), is involved, it could have big implications for the film and Carol’s future in the MCU. A name-drop for P.E.G.A.S.U.S. in Captain Marvel would mean that Carol’s Thanos-defeating powers could be acquired from a P.E.G.A.S.U.S. location — which would make her only more of a threat to the Skrulls and also make the Skrulls more interested in whatever P.E.G.A.S.U.S. is developing.

2. ‘Captain Marvel’ Exists In An Alternate Timeline

Another interesting theory found over at Screen Rant states that Captain Marvel exists in an alternate timeline, which would explain why Captain Marvel’s existence has largely been unacknowledged despite the fact that the upcoming film’s plot implies she comes to prominence as a superhero in the 1990s. Thanks to Ant-Man & the Wasp and Doctor Strange, the MCU has already begun to toy with the idea of multiple dimensions like the Quantum Realm, the astral plane, and time travel. It’s hard to say how it could feasibly happen but it’s not entirely out of the realm of possibility that Carol Danvers could exist in another timeline altogether and that she will need to be transferred to the timeline the rest of the MCU is working with so that she can defeat Thanos. How could this be done? Well, having Doctor Strange on hand to assist means time travel is easy enough but there could also be something within the Quantum Realm that could help get Carol from one timeline to another. If the latter is true, then that means that Ant-Man, who was stuck in the Quantum Realm when the Thanos snap happened, will be a key player is getting Carol to the dominant MCU timeline because he will be the shepherd within the Quantum Realm.

3. Captain Marvel Has Ties To The Soul Stone, Gamora & Thanos

A few theories are floating around the involve Captain Marvel and the Soul Stone, which was revealed to be hidden on the planet Vormir in Avengers: Infinity War, although that reveal (and the fact that Red Skull was guarding it) surprised viewers. This theory is partly comprised of a theory posed by Bustle and our own theorizing, so keep an open mind.

Bustle theorized back in April 2018 that Captain Marvel is the one who hid the Soul Stone on Vormir since the planet is in Kree territory but considering it’s a fairly minor planet (as The Wrap relatedly notes, it could be a Kree prison planet and is referenced only a handful of times in the comics), it would be the perfect place to hide the stone.

Here’s where our theory picks up that lead: it is known in Marvel comics that Mar-Vell (who bears the Captain Marvel name until Carol Danvers takes it over) and Thanos have a history that’s somewhat contentious. If, as a Kree, Mar-Vell knew the location of the Soul Stone then it’s likely he could have told Carol considering the two have a very close relationship. If this is the case, then Gamora, on behalf of her father, would have had reason to target Mar-Vell and Carol for information on the Soul Stone’s location because she reveals in Infinity War that she’s seen the map to the stone, which Mar-Vell and Carol would know.

As such, if Carol/Captain Marvel’s ties to Thanos begin with this issue of the Soul Stone’s location and Gamora has indeed interacted with her before, then there’s a chance that Captain Marvel was able to learn from Gamora (a bit of top-secret information trading, perhaps?) of Thanos’ weaknesses which would then be useful in the future, e.g. during Avengers: Endgame.

4. We’ll Learn How Nick Fury Loses His Eye

Seeing Nick Fury with both of his eyes in the trailers for Captain Marvel has led a lot of folks to believe that this is the movie where Nick loses said eye but also that the circumstances around that loss are more important than we might think. One theory says that Carol Danvers’ cat, Goose (originally called Chewie in the comics), is actually a Skrull in another form and that Goose transforms back into Skrull form and damages Nick’s eye. This would fall in line with a key line that Nick has already said — “The last time I trusted someone, I lost my eye” — and the fact that his soft spot for Goose is well-established, making him a prime target.

5. Doctor Strange May Appear Thanks To Time Travel

Because the use of the Time Stone and timelines feel so integral when it comes to bringing Captain Marvel into the contemporary storyline, it stands to reason that a fan theory exists that allows all of this time-related business to hinge on it. One Reddit theory posits that Doctor Strange will appear in Captain Marvel’s post-credits scene to warn Nick Fury of the Thanos snap that we see in Avengers: Infinity War and that Nick will need to call for Captain Marvel because of it. If this happens, it means that this is the one way out of the more than 14 million ways the Avengers will be able to defeat Thanos, as Doctor Strange explained in Infinity War.

Along those same lines, another Redditor theorizes that Doctor Strange will not only appear but he will have or will create the pager that Nick uses to contact Captain Marvel at the end of Infinity War. This is backed up by Nick’s reaction somewhat calm reaction to seeing Maria Hill turn to dust and him subsequently reaching for the pager almost immediately.
