It has been almost a year since audiences suffered the emotional toll of The Snap at the end of the Avengers: Infinity War.

Now, as marketing ramps up for Avengers: Endgame – which will conclude more than ten years of storytelling for the MCU’s OG heroes – we have learned that the original plan was to turn our hearts into snap-dust at the end of this summer’s upcoming blockbuster.

Longtime Marvel movie writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus recently sat down with Empire to discuss their process: “We had so much story in those early drafts of Infinity War,” McFeely revealed, “that, if anything, we thought we maybe shouldn’t do The Snap until the end of act one of Endgame.”

As upsetting as The Snap was, we can’t imagine Infinity War having ended any other way. (Save for maybe Infinity War restructured to conclude with the tragic death of Gamora building to a cliffhanger ending of Thanos arriving at Wakanda in search of his last stone.)

Ultimately, the decision to keep The Snap in Infinity War came down to its biggest proponent: Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige.

“We talked about that ending for years and years and years,” Feige said. “It was the reason to adapt Infinity Gauntlet. What was the most shocking thing we could do? End the movie with The Snap.”

The Snap felt ’round the world as kept fans guessing as to how the surviving Avengers will repair the damage Thanos has done – and the newest Endgame trailer strongly hints that the key to that fix lies in the Quantum Realm.

We’ll find out how it all shakes out when Endgame hits theaters April 26. Get your tickets here when they go on sale.
