Everyone has been speculating about who might land the role of Batman in Matt Reeves’ upcoming standalone film, particularly now that Ben Affleck is officially out.

The wait is over: According to Justin Kroll at Variety, the next man to wear the cowl will be Robert Pattinson. A counterpiece by Deadline says that – hold up – it’s not actually a done deal and it’s down to Pattinson and Nicholas Hoult, but Kroll is largely regarded as one of the best and most accurate scoopers in the business, so if he says it’s a lock, it’s likely a done deal. Still, grain of salt, it’s not official, yadda yadda – you know the drill.

There have been rumors for months that Pattinson was in the running for the role, but they largely seemed fueled by fan art rather than any real concrete evidence. Now, it appears he’ll officially be taking on the role of the younger Bruce Wayne that Reeves had envisioned. At only 32 years of age, Pattinson will now become the youngest actor ever to play Batman in a movie.

When buzz originally hit the internet that Pattinson was in the running, some derided the choice and dismissed him as “the Twilight guy.” But that just goes to show those detractors haven’t been paying attention. In the years since Twilight, Pattinson has gone on to become one of the more remarkable and quietly magnetic actors working today, eschewing big budget fare to focus on arthouse indie projects. Whatever Pattinson saw in Reeves’ proposed script and story, it was good enough to draw the limelight-dodging actor back to a studio tentpole that’s part of a franchise, which is doubly exciting. Reeves recently concluded one of the strongest modern-day trilogies with Dawn and War for the Planet of the Apes. The potential of what he could do teamed up with Pattinson makes even this Batman-weary gal excited by the prospect.

Warner Bros. has been wise to give Reeves plenty of time to polish his script, hoping to right certain wrongs from recent movies featuring the Caped Crusader. There is no start date set for The Batman filming, but Pattinson is about to shoot another Warner Bros. project, Christopher Nolan’s mystery event film, which is set to hit theaters next summer. So no word yet on when shooting for The Batman might begin, but depending on how long it takes him to wrap his shoot for Nolan, it could begin late this year or early next.
