Let’s be real, things at the box office for the past month have been…slow. To say the least. Hobbs & Shaw has done okayish, but everything else? Not so much. What can I say? We’re in the dog days of August before everyone goes back to school. It’s always the slow time of the year.

But IT: Chapter Two is lurking just around the corner and early predictions are that it’s set to shock the box office out of its doldrums with a $110 million opening weekend. That may seem low considering the first IT opened two years ago to the tune of $123 million, still the highest-grossing horror movie (and an R-rated one, at that) ever made. But it’s worth noting the early tracking for the first movie predicted the film would make just $50-60 million at its highest end, and IT went and doubled that total. Box office pundits always tend to undershoot horror movies, despite the proven success time and time again of the genre. Just like the hope for next month, the first IT saved a late summer movie season that had a number of underperforming films in the summer months before its release.

And just because early tracking has the sequel raking in only (hah, “only”) $95-110 million doesn’t mean those numbers won’t jump up if the first wave of reviews are released and they’re as glowing as they were for the first one. Word-of-mouth is still a powerful driving force with influencing moviegoers and increasing a box office total, so it’s entirely possible that IT: Chapter Two will have an opening box office weekend on par with or even bigger than the first chapter.

Either way, it’s set to be a huge success for Warner Bros., which is desperately needed: a fair few of WB’s films this year have unexpectedly underperformed if not outright flopped. It’s especially helpful that Chapter 2 is the only wide-release movie releasing that opening weekend. It will have quite a few weeks after with no real competition, with the only potentially real contender not coming until September 20 when Ad Astra releases. Even then, that’s a reach. Basically, IT: Chapter Two has all of September to stretch long legs and remain atop the box office, officially capping off a packed summer of horror.

IT: Chapter Two hits theaters on September 6th. With theaters likely being packed, you’ll want to grab your tickets now.
