Each week on Atom Insider, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, Bad Boys for Life surprised just about everyone with strong critical reviews, enthusiastic audience ratings, and a fiery box office.

This Week’s Top Earner  – ‘Bad Boys For Life’

Audiences knew what they gonna do this weekend, and that’s watch the third entry in Sony’s Bad Boys franchise, this time directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah after a 17-year hiatus since the previous entry from Michael Bay. The action-comedy scored $62.1 million domestically over the three-day weekend, with current estimates pointing to a possible $73 million total over the four-day weekend. Worldwide, Bad Boys for Life already has $112 million in the bank over a reported budget of $90 million, making it the annual January surprise hit. And with another sequel reportedly on its way, we can safely say the title of this film appears to be accurate.

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office

1917 and Dolittle are both Universal films, so it’s not exactly a competition. But the two films were neck and neck all weekend for the #2 spot, which is still shaking out a winner as we finish the long weekend. As of Sunday, 1917 is up by a hair at about $22 million domestically, with Dolittle at $21.9 million for #3. 1917 is the clear success story overall at this point thanks to its heaps of awards buzz and smaller production budget making room for a profitable theatrical run. On the flipside, Dolittle cost upwards of $175 million due to expensive reshoots and other production issues, making its worldwide total of just $56.8 million look like no laughing matter.

Further down the Top 10, Jumanji: The Next Level (Sony) held onto stronger box office numbers over Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Disney), which plummeted to #5 with just $8.3 million. Like a Boss (Paramount) faced a similar fate as it dropped 5 spots to #9 in its second week below Little Women (Sony), Just Mercy (Warner Bros), and Knives Out (Lionsgate), which actually climbed to #9 this week in its eighth weekend. Whodunnit? More like who knew?

And They’re Out

Underwater (20th Century) clearly wasn’t a breath of fresh air for audiences. The horror sci-fi dropped four spots to #11 in just its second week, which is bad news considering the film cost an estimated $50-80 million and has only made $26.8 million worldwide.

Last is Spies in Disguise (20th Century), which fell to #12 after four weeks at the box office. The animated comedy didn’t exactly make an impact with pop culture, but it still managed to outgross its reported production budget of $100 million with nearly $133 million worldwide.

That’s it for this weekend. Check back with Atom Insider next week as we recap all the newest releases vying for the top of the box office.
