For the better part of a decade, zombies have been a big deal thanks to Zombieland, The Walking Dead, and the White Walkers on Game of Thrones. Now, director Jim Jarmusch is getting in on the undead action with the zom-com The Dead Don’t Die.

The director’s follow-up to the underrated Patterson (also starring Driver), has assembled one of the best casts in the history of human events for his first zombie movie. The ensemble includes: Bill Murray (who blasts zombies with a shotgun), Adam Driver (who hacks them with a machete), and Oscar-winner Tilda Swinton (yas queen!), who plays an eccentric mortician who wields a katana and goes all Kill Bill on the undead attacking her small town in upstate New York. (“Tilda Swinton attacking zombies with a samurai sword” is arguably the greatest sentence of 2019.)

Jarmusch tackling the living dead for the first time in his career is like catnip to film fans; and judging by the trailer, he has pulled off a clever mix of his trademark dark, deadpan comedy with some scares thrown in. And while we’ve seen zombies un-dig their own graves before and wreak havoc on the living, we’ve never seen them try to re-enter their lives in the way Jarmusch depicts here. Carol Cane’s freshly re-animated corpse, for example, shows up wanting “Chardonnaaaaay” instead of “Braaaaains!”

This isn’t the first time indie filmmaker Jarmusch has dived into more genre fare. His first stab at horror – or at least horror elements – was the slow-burn (and very good) vampire romance, Only Lovers Left Alive, which starred Swinton and Tom Hiddleston.

Selena Gomez, Rosie Perez, Chloë Sevigny, Danny Glover, RZA, Tom Waits, and Iggy Pop round out the “greatest zombie cast ever disassembled,” as the marketing declares. So far, the hype seems legit.
