James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad has added another Marvel actor to its roster.

Ant-Man and Blade Runner 2049 actor David Dastmalchian is set to play Polka-Dot Man, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dastmalchian joins fellow Marvel alumnus Idris Elba (Thor) in DC and Warner Bros. rebootquel of the franchise which started with David Ayer’s 2016 blockbuster.

Polka-Dot Man, who fans glimpsed in LEGO form in The LEGO Batman Movie, will be joined by fellow DC baddies like Ratcatcher, Peacemaker (he loves peace so much he is willing to kill to get it), and (drum roll, please) King Shark. Elba was originally set to take over the role of Deadshot from Will Smith, but the actor will now instead play a completely different character.

This isn’t Dastmalchian’s first appearance in a DC movie. The actor’s breakthrough role came in 2008’s The Dark Knight, where he played an Arkham inmate the Joker used during his assassination attempt on the Mayor of Gotham.

Polka-Dot Man is an interesting, albeit unusual, villain from DC’s ranks. (The unusual factor likely being that which appealed to Gunn, who made Rocket Raccoon and Groot household names.) The character first appeared in Detective Comics #300 in 1962, and he is distinguished by his “bizarre costume covered in spots.” Those spots can be used for a variety of visually-interesting purposes, from weaponry to helping create a vehicle.

We’ll see which parts of Polka-Dot Man’s arsenal Gunn plans to put on the big screen when Suicide Squad hits theaters August 6, 2021.
