Ever since Robert Pattinson was officially cast as a younger, dapper Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, speculation has been flying around about who will land the other major roles. Most recently, the role of Catwoman has been bouncing around the internet rumor mill, with the final four names of Ana de Armas, Ella Balinska, Eiza Gonzalez and Zoë Kravitz reportedly testing opposite Robert Pattinson.

Now it’s all but official, reports THR: Zoë Kravitz is our new Catwoman, a.k.a. Selina Kyle. The decision was reportedly made this weekend, with the final four screentests happening early in October with the decision being narrowed down to the final two last week.

Kravitz will join a cast that already includes the aforementioned Pattinson in the lead role, with Jeffrey Wright also already on board as Commissioner Jim Gordon. Jonah Hill has also been rumored for an unspecified role, but take that one with a grain of salt.

As Catwoman, Kravitz will be stepping into a storied and long-celebrated character. Selina Kyle has been portrayed a number of times in live-action in the ’60s TV series (Eartha Kitt, Julie Newman, and Lee Meriwether), the recently wrapped Gotham (Camren Bicondova & Lili Simmons), and in film (Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, and Anne Hathaway), as well as countless animated projects and video games. She’s been around almost as long as Batman himself has, first appearing in 1940 in Batman #1, alternately serving as foil to and lover of Bruce Wayne over the years.

It’s unclear if Reeves will offer a different take on Catwoman or how he’ll set her (and Batman, for that matter) apart from what’s come before. Reeves is aiming for a grounded, more realistic take on the Caped Crusader, with plans for a large rogues’ gallery of Batman villains. Whether Catwoman will remain a complete antagonist to Batman or if they’ll have the attraction and romance that has marked other versions is a mystery right now.

The Batman is set for a June 25, 2021 release date so there’s still plenty of time. But expect more casting news to start trickling in now that the Bat and the Cat have been locked down.
