X-Men: Dark Phoenix is Fox’s second attempt to tell the iconic Marvel Comics storyline on the big screen. It’s also the second time a movie about Jean Grey becoming her super powerful, very evil self has hit creative speed bumps — this time, in the form of extensive reshoots.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Simon Kinberg — who makes his feature directorial debut with what’s expected to be the last X-Men movie featuring this cast — revealed that he shot a new third act for the movie. Instead of the climax taking place in space (which would make sense, given Dark Phoenix’s cosmic origins), it now occurs aboard a military train housing the kidnapped X-Men. Kinberg, who also co-wrote the previous Dark Phoenix movie, 2006’s much-maligned X-Men: The Last Stand, says that his vision for Dark Phoenix was perhaps too ambitious for directing his first feature. “I think the biggest challenge is modulating the film so that we have the big scale and visual-effects action that these movies require, but balancing that in a way that feels calibrated with the drama,” he says. “You have these big space sequences and trains flying through the air and people firing lightning bolts, but you also have a lot of emotional, four-page dramatic dialogue scenes.”

While having emotional stakes thread through all the CG action, the problem here is that the filmmakers seem to think audiences are more invested in Sophie Turner’s take on the character than they really are.

The limited time we spent with her Jean Grey in Apocalypse fell short of earning the level of investment required to have this mulligan on the Dark Phoenix storyline truly resonate. And audiences have only had one movie with this character, as opposed to the two fans had with Famke Jansen in the role with the first X-Men trilogy.
