Rocketman star Taron Egerton is poised to have a summer hit on his hands with Paramount’s much-anticipated Elton John musical biopic. But the actor could have appeared in another high-profile summer movie a year earlier, with last summer’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Egerton was one of several actors in the running to play smuggler Han Solo in the much-maligned Star Wars prequel, along with Alden Ehrenreich, who eventually got the role. In a recent cover story interview with The Hollywood Reporter for Rocketman, the Kingsman star revealed why Ehrenreich landed the role over him. It turns out, Egerton made it easy for his competition.

“I didn’t go to the last audition,” Egerton said. “Because it didn’t feel right to me. To be honest, I think it was always going to be Alden’s part.”

Egerton may have dodged a bullet there. Solo infamously, and publicly, suffered from behind-the-scenes troubles that resulted in Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy replacing original directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord with Ron Howard after the duo had completed a significant amount of filming on the project. Howard would oversee extensive reshoots on the May 2018 release, which was met with a critical and box office shrug. Solo‘s less-than-stellar success lead to a moratorium on future movies under the “A Star Wars Story” label.

Solo wasn’t the only problematic project that Egerton opened up to THR about. When asked about his titular role in 2018’s huge box office disappointment, Robin Hood, the actor expressed no regrets. “I thought the pitch was genuinely interesting, and I thought it sounded like a legitimate, gritty reimagining of something that’s always been dealt with in a flowery, glossy way.”

Huh. That’s one way to describe that movie.

Egerton is a scary-talented actor and early buzz on Rocketman says the movie could do for his career what Bohemian Rhapsody did for Rami Malek’s.
