After months of will they/won’t they speculation, it’s official: Warner Bros. has decided to bump the release date of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet back by two weeks to July 31st. There was always about a 50/50 chance that it would happen, so, while disappointing, it’s not entirely unexpected. Speculation it might move was fueled further last month when the studio released the first official trailer for the film and it lacked a release date, merely stating that it was coming soon.

But with this bump back comes a silver lining. Instead of Tenet releasing on July 17th, theaters will now be running a repertory screening of Nolan’s Inception for its 10th anniversary to tide moviegoers over until Tenet hits theaters. Consider it a Nolan appetizer before the Nolan main course.

In slightly more surprising news is the fact WB also chose to bump the release date of Wonder Woman 1984 from August 12 to October 2, announcing it on the official Twitter account a short while ago:

Star Gal Gadot also shared the news on her Instagram page, saying, “The new release date for WW84 is October 2, 2020. Wow, it’s finally happening, and I couldn’t be more excited! To all the fans that stuck with us through this time, thank you so much! We couldn’t have done this without you. I’m so excited for you to get to see it. #WW84 will be worth the wait.”

While it may be disappointing to get the news that two of Warner Bros.’ biggest tentpoles are being bumped, this is a smart move on the studio’s part. Theaters across the country are slowly starting to reopen this weekend, but not all theater chains are on the same page and not all states and cities are reopening at the same rate. Tenet will be the test run for WB and bumping back WW84, its next big blockbuster, back by two months can only ensure more theaters will be open and more people will be likely to see it.

This is especially important for a movie that looks to be one of the biggest films not just for WB, but of the year. Diana of Themyscira’s first film netted $821 million globally and the hope is that her sequel would cross that exalted billion-dollar mark. With Wonder Woman 1984 being the first truly huge tentpole scheduled to hit theaters in the fall and audiences chomping at the bit to get back to the movies by then, it’s entirely possible.

Now we turn our eyes to Disney and Mulan. Previously scheduled to hit theaters a week after Tenet, it will now be the first big tentpole release on July 24th. Hopefully, it sticks to its release date.
