A little over a month ago, we got the bummer news that Spider-Man was certainly done with the MCU as Sony and Marvel failed to reach a new deal about sharing Spider-Man. At the time, it seemed implausible to believe that the two studios wouldn’t eventually work it out as they each have too much to lose by letting a deal fall apart: Sony because it has found its greatest success when paired with Marvel’s momentum and creative direction and Marvel because it wants to keep Spider-Man as one of its future tentpoles of the MCU.

Now, both sides have come to their senses. THR reported that Sony and Marvel have officially worked out a new deal that will allow the two studios to partner for at least one more Spider-Man movie in the MCU, with Jon Watts, the director of the previous two Spider-Man films, likely returning to direct the third movie. Marvel’s Kevin Feige will once again produce and oversee the overall creative direction. A release date has even been set for the third movie: July 16, 2021.

As an added bonus, Spider-Man will also appear in at least one other upcoming Marvel movie. Depending on how things go, there is the chance that multiple movies could be in the future. Feige commented on the deal, stating both sides were obviously thrilled:

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Reading between the lines, that reads like a fairly confident statement from a man who has quite a bit of faith that Spider-Man will appear in the MCU – and potentially Sony’s Spider-Man universe – for years to come. Good day for fans of our beloved webhead everywhere.
