It’s the first week of December, which means Hollywood is officially in full swing for the holiday movie season. Huge, record-breaking tentpoles, heartwarming family fare, and awards season hopefuls are all around the corner. It all means news continues to flow. As always, Atom Insider is bringing you a few hand-picked stories we think you’ll like. Ready? Let’s dive in.

‘Magic Mike 3’ Is A Go

The idea has been kicked around for a while, but it’s officially confirmed: a third Magic Mike movie is happening with Channing Tatum returning to the titular role and Steven Soderbergh returning to direct, and Reid Carolin writing the screenplay. Don’t expect a fourth movie, however: the title of the movie is Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which all but confirms this will officially be the final movie in the Magic Mike series. Channing Tatum confirmed the news and the title on social media:

It appeared Soderbergh was content to be finished with the Magic Mike movies, but the Magic Mike Live Las Vegas experience apparently relit the fire in him for a third movie. “As soon as I saw what Channing, Reid, and the Magic Mike choreographic team did with the live show, I said we have to make another one,” he said in a statement. “Mike Lane’s dream of connecting people through dance must be realized.

Sony & Marvel Have Re-Upped For A New Spider-Man Trilogy

Excellent news for anyone wondering if Spider-Man and the MCU would part ways once Spider-Man: No Way Home hits screens and Tom Holland’s contract comes to a close: Spider-Man producer and former Sony Pictures boss Amy Pascal has confirmed this is not the end. Speaking to Fandango, she had this to say:

“This is not the last movie that we are going to make with Marvel — [this is not] the last Spider-Man movie. We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel. We’re thinking of this as three films, and now we’re going to go onto the next three. This is not the last of our MCU movies…Yes, Marvel and Sony are going to keep going together as partners.”

In truth, while this is great to hear, it’s not that much of a surprise. Despite the drama that unfolded a few years ago when it looked as though the two studios had parted on acrimonious terms, there’s simply too much profit to be had for both studios not to continue this Spider-Man sharing partnership. In recent months, Holland has expressed in interviews that he’s uncertain about his future as the webslinger, but it would appear he’s on board and will be part of the MCU for at least a few more years. With No Way Home obliterating ticket sales left and right, it’s clear the decision made a few years ago by Sony and Marvel to renew their partnership was the right one; hopefully, this new contract will continue their joint success.

Tom Burke Replaces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in ‘Furiosa’

Per Deadline, Tom Burke has replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in the upcoming Furiosa, the spinoff prequel of Mad Max: Fury Road. Abdul-Mateen II previously had to leave the George Miller-directed project due to scheduling conflicts with another project, which isn’t surprising. With projects like Aquaman, Candyman, Watchmen, and the upcoming The Matrix Resurrections to his name, he’s one of the hottest actors in Hollywood right now. The move to replace him with Tom Burke considerably changes the character, not the least of which because they have completely different energy on screen. Burke is an excellent actor, but with movies like Mank and The Souvenir on his resume, he’s not quite as well-known to audiences. It’s unknown what role he’s set to play, but this is certainly the biggest role of his life. Clearly, Miller saw something in him when tapping Burke to replace Abdul-Mateen II. Production is still quite some time away, but Burke joins a cast that already includes Anya Taylor-Joy as the younger Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth, who was cast some time back in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

Nic Cage Cast As Dracula In Universal’s ‘Renfield’; Awkwafina Joins, Too

Despite not being based on one of its classic monsters, but one of their henchmen, Universal’s Renfield project is heating up. Back in August, Nicholas Hoult was cast in the title role. Now, Universal has found its Dracula in Nicholas Cage. Just a day after Cage’s casting, Deadline broke the news that Awkwafina had joined the cast, as well, though it’s not yet known what role she’s playing. The movie is being directed by Chris McKay (The Lego Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) off a script from Rick and Morty writer Ryan Ridley with an original story outline by The Walking Dead‘s Robert Kirkman. In Bram Stoker’s original novel, R.M. Renfield was a patient at an asylum who was thought to suffer from paranoid delusions; as it turns out, he was actually an acolyte of Dracula. While nothing is known of the story except the fact that it’s expected to be set in modern day, it seems like it could lean into a darkly comedic tone considering the team it’s assembling in front of and behind the camera. With this project moving fast, it’s likely we’ll hear more regarding a release date and when it might go into production soon.

A ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ Remake Is A Go At 20th Century

20th Century is heading back to the basketball court. A White House Can’t Jump remake is a go with Calmatic tapped as director; Deadline broke the news. Calmatic recently wrapped up another remake of a classic ’90s comedy with New Line’s reboot of House Party; now he turns his attention to the White Men Can’t Jump remake off a script from Kenya Barris and Doug Hall. The original 1992 movie starred Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes, launching Harrelson’s movie career and elevating Snipes’ star. The two played a pair of basketball hustlers who start out trying to hustle each other only to team up for a bigger score. The new movie is expected to follow the same general storyline but how it will be updated for modern times is unknown.

Anna Chazelle Set To Write & Direct A Horror Movie Based On Medusa For Fangoria Studios

Finally, some interesting news for horror lovers. Anna Chazelle has signed on to write and direct a horror movie based on the Greek legend of Medusa for Fangoria Studios. In Greek legend, Medusa was one of the Gorgons, a woman with snakes for hair whose gaze could turn people to stone. Perseus was framed as a hero in Greek mythology for cutting of Medusa’s head. However, some versions of the story paint Medusa as a much more tragic figure, the victim of male lust and the jealousy of Athena, and it appears this might be the direction in which this project could go. Chazelle said in a statement

“It’s easy to demonize Medusa, but her story is filled with justifiable feminine rage, both at the gods who created her and the mortals who seek to destroy her. I’m excited to dive into the tale of her nascence into the Greek pantheon, and hopefully challenge the widely-accepted definition of Medusa as a mere monster.”

Tara Ansley, Armen Aghaeian, and Abhi Goel will produce for Fangoria studios, with Aghaeian speaking to the underappreciated nature of the figure of Medusa: “Medusa is a global icon, yet her story has been overlooked for far too long,” he said. “Anna’s interpretation of Medusa against the backdrop of Ancient Greece will make for a cinematic journey to remember.” With the subject matter and the fact it’s rare we ever get horror set in the ancient world, this is a really intriguing project to keep an eye on.
