Shang-Chi Star Simu Liu Lands First Villain Role

It appears Marvel’s Simu Liu is about to go from superhero to supervillain. The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star has boarded the movie Atlas, where he’s set to play the villain opposite Jennifer Lopez’s protagonist (via Deadline). Sterling K. Brown and Abraham Popoola also recently joined the cast and are set for key roles in the movie, which is being directed by action veteran Brad Peyton (Rampage, San Andreas, Frontier). The newest draft of the script is being written by Aron Eli Coleite off an original story by Leo Sardarian. Considering Peyton’s cast, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the story will involve action. Lopez stars as Atlas, a woman fighting to save humankind from a rogue AI soldier that has decided humanity must be eradicated. To do so, she has to team up with her greatest enemy: another AI. It should be a lot of fun to see Liu sink his teeth into an anatagonist role this time.

The Stand’s Owen Teague Tapped To Star In New Planet of the Apes Movie

A few months ago, it was reported that a brand-new Planet of the Apes trilogy was in the works from 20th Century Studios. It now seems that the trilogy has found its new lead. Owen Teague, the standout star of last year’s The Stand miniseries, has been tapped to play the lead primate in the new installment. Deadline broke the news.

It’s not clear what the new movie will be about. Director Wes Ball has been working on the script and on development for the past few years, and production is aiming for a start date later this year. Ball delivered a script to studio execs earlier this year that had them excited about where a new trilogy could go. Regardless of what the story is about, it’s great news that Teague will be leading the movie. Though still quite young, Teague has been in the game for a good decade, and has started gaining attention for his work in multiple Stephen King projects including The Stand (Harold Lauder) and It (Patrick Hockstetter), as well as indie dramas like Montana Story and To Leslie. Reportedly, his audition for the Planet of the Apes lead blew everyone at the studio away, so it’s exciting to see what he’ll do with his first lead role in a big-budget film.

Aubrey Plaza Joins Star-Studded Cast For Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis

Hot off her lauded turn as the star of Emily the Criminal, Aubrey Plaza already has her next project lined up. She’s set to join the eye-popping ensemble cast of Francis Ford Coppola’s upcoming Megalopolis. Plaza joins a cast that already includes Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, and Laurence Fishburne. Megalopolis has long been a passion project for the legendary director; such a passion, in fact, that Coppola financed it himself to shoot the script he wrote. As he has described it in the past, Megalopolis explores how “the fate of Rome haunts a modern world unable to solve its own social problems in this epic story of political ambition, genius and conflicted love.” So…make of that what you will. It’s always interesting to see what Coppola has up his sleeve, and with the cast it’s already landed, Megalopolis has quickly become a project to watch.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Releases First-Look Images

Benoit Blanc is back, baby! A few first-look images for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery were recently released to an internet eager to see what the Knives Out sequel will hold. Two new images were released by Netflix for the movie, which will also play in theaters for a limited run. Daniel Craig’s Detective Benoit Blanc and his delightful Foghorn Leghorn accent are back. This time, however, he heads to Greece, to sift through the layers of a brand-new mystery with a brand-new cast. That cast can be seen in the first-look image above. From L-R: Edward Norton, Madelyn Cline, Kathryn Hahn, Dave Bautista, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, and Craig. Suspiciously missing is Ethan Hawke, leading one to ask the question of whether or not he’s the one who will be murdered.

The second image released shows Johnson on set with Janelle Monáe, giving her instruction on a scene:

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery will drop on Netflix on December 23rd. It’s not clear if it will also hit theaters that same day or on another date.

Ryan Gosling & Margo Robbie Teaming Up For New Ocean’s Eleven Movie

Even before their upcoming Barbie hits screens, Ryan Gosling is in talks to reteam with co-star Margot Robbie for a new Ocean’s Eleven movie in development. The movie has not yet been officially greenlit, but with the star power of Robbie and Gosling behind it, it’s only a matter of time. The new movie, penned by Carrie Solomon and planned as a soft reboot of the Ocean’s Eleven franchise, is reportedly a prequel movie to the main franchise. At the moment, all that’s known of the prequel is that it will be set in Europe in the 1960s. Gosling and Robbie are two of Hollywood’s best working talents and industry powerhouses, so if they want to get the ball rolling, they will. A movie set in mid-century Europe among the jet-setting crowd starring the duo has the potential to be an incredibly entertaining movie, indeed. In the meantime, audiences can next see them on screen together as Barbie and Ken next July when Barbie hits theaters.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off Spinoff In The Works From Cobra Kai Creators

The ’80s are rife with classic teen movies, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is near the top of the list of most beloved. In the Hollywood era of remakes and reboots, it’s kind of crazy that a studio hasn’t already tried to remake the 1986 movie. But that’s now changing–sort of. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is getting a spinoff titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off from Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald with a script from Cobra Kai executive story editor Bill Posley. For those wondering who Sam and Victor are, fear not: They’re the two valets in the original Ferris Bueller’s Day Off who took Cameron’s dad’s Ferrari for a joy ride, but they were never named in the original movie. It’s not yet known what the spinoff will be about, but we can be sure a certain cherry-red classic 1961 Ferrari may make an appearance.
