Those of you who are fans of seeing Tom Cruise sprint at top speed and jump off increasingly taller things, you’re in luck. Cruise (and therefore Paramount) has announced that the Mission: Impossible franchise will continue with Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 coming in back-to-back summers of 2021 and 2022.

Even better? Director Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed the last two excellent installments (and gave us the forever gift and GIF of a mustachioed Henry Cavill reloading his bicep guns), is back on board to direct both. Mission: Impossible – Fallout grossed almost a cool $800 million at the global box office, pulling in $100 million more than the previous M:I flick, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, and proving that McQuarrie and Cruise make some awesomely action-packed magic together.

At this point, it’s a race to see which franchise heads to space first: Mission: Impossible or Fast & Furious. My bet’s on Tom Cruise – I mean, at this point, he’s probably going to BASE jump from the International Space Station. Or hitch a ride on an actual rocket heading into space. Hah!

…Okay, but seriously, this is where we’re heading, right? This is the guy, after all, who broke his ankle so badly when filming Fallout that doctors told him he might never run again and six weeks later he was back to sprinting full speed on set. Cruise is an adrenaline junkie with a work ethic that is unparalleled in Hollywood, and McQuarrie is arguably the best director working in compelling action today. If you told me they were heading to space, I’d just nod and go, “Seems reasonable.”

No word yet on whether or not the rest of the cast from Fallout will be returning (er, well, everyone who made it out alive, that is). But, considering their romantic storyline just got started, we can hazard a guess that Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa Faust will definitely return to complement Cruise’s Ethan Hunt. And it’s likely that Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) will be back to round out the team. Might we even see the return of Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt? It’s entirely possible.

In any case, I’m excited to see what McQuarrie and Cruise have in store for us. Cruise tends to be picky about his projects (we’ll just pretend The Mummy never happened), and he and McQuarrie have an implicit trust in one another. Considering McQuarrie was being heavily courted by a number of studios after Fallout and ultimately chose to reteam with Cruise, it really says something about how comfortable the pair is working together. Here’s to them making more crazy beautiful action together for the next three years.
