Some excellent news on the Marvel front today: Veteran actor Michelle Yeoh is reportedly in talks to join the cast of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Talks are still ongoing and there’s no word on what character she’s circling, but reports from Comicbook.com have indicated she won’t be playing Aleta Ogord/Starhawk, her character from Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but a completely new character for Shang-Chi’s first film. Staunch supporters of never crossing the streams might object to her taking on another role in the MCU, but this is a smart choice by Marvel. For starters, her character was barely in GotG2 and looked like an unwashed goth, which we can expect will be a far cry from her look in Shang-Chi. This also isn’t the first time Marvel actors have double-dipped in the MCU: It’s Marvel M.O. to take actors with tiny roles and later repurpose them for bigger ones: Gemma Chan (Captain Marvel/The Eternals), Enver Gjokaj (The Avengers/Agent Carter), Laura Haddock (Captain America/Guardians of the Galaxy), Alfre Woodard (Captain America: Civil War/Luke Cage).

Plus, fans who aren’t familiar with Yeoh’s background outside of Marvel, Star Trek: Discovery and Rich, Crazy Asians may not realize that Yeoh is one of the most distinguished martial arts movie actors of her generation. She may be 57 years old, but she can still throw down with the best of them, and that will be needed for the action-packed Shang-Chi. From the title alone and Marvel’s penchant for funneling each standalone franchise into a different genre, we can guess this might be a pure martial arts movie à la Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – which Yeoh headlined.

Don’t believe me? Just watch:

Surprisingly, Yeoh never had formal training in martial arts, instead relying on her strong dance background and natural athleticism to help her in fight sequences. Her experience as a dancer makes her a graceful fighter on screen. She’s also an experienced stuntwoman, to the point she still does most of her stunts even into her late 50s. As an addition to a movie that’s sure to be full of complex stunt choreography, there’s no one better to add to the cast than the veteran Yeoh.

If Yeoh does indeed sign on, she’ll join a cast that already includes Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Tony Chiu-Wai Leung as The Mandarin, and Awkwafina in an unspecified role. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will be in theaters on February 12, 2021. We’ll keep you updated as more casting announcements drop.
