With movie nomenclature smack in the middle of an era of subtitles in movie names, it feels like movie titles are getting ever longer, frustrating SEO headline writers and Google searchers alike. But today, all those other The Age of the Dawn of Apocalypse: Rise of Wars movie titles can take a seat, because Margot Robbie revealed the official title for her Harley Quinn spinoff, and it…is glorious. Truly, it takes the art of excessively long movie titles and elevates it.

On Instagram, the star and producer posted the title page of Christina Hodson’s script for the film, and it, well, see for yourself:

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that, yes, that is the actual title and not just Robbie trolling us (although that would be completely in line with Harley Quinn’s mischievous ways). So the really for real, official title we’re looking at for the Birds of Prey spinoff is – [takes a deep breath] – Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).

Sorry not sorry, but that is an amazing title, and just so, so Harley. Is it a nod to Birdman‘s full title Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)? Or perhaps Mariah Carey’s 2005 comeback album, The Emancipation of Mimi? Who cares? All we need to know is that hilarious mouthful aside, the title appears to lay to rest fears some fans had after Suicide Squad: That Harley Quinn’s unhealthy relationship with the Joker would continue to be romanticized as a beautiful, amour fou of type relationship instead of shown in no uncertain terms as the abusive relationship it actually is.

In the comics, Harley leaves Joker and frees herself of his emotional manipulation and abuse in an amazing way, relying on her girl gang of Poison Ivy and Catwoman to help her get him out of her head and move on. The pivotal confrontation between her and Joker happens when Harley sneaks into Arkham Asylum to break out her new boyfriend, Mason, and crosses paths with her cancerous ex-boyfriend, Joker. He goads her and goads her until she finally snaps, beating him to a bloody pulp – because Joker knows how much she hates it and hates what he brings out in her. It’s a violent confrontation that underscores exactly why Harley left him in the first place: She doesn’t like who she is when she’s with him and knows she can be a better person without him.

Harley Quinn cuts ties with Joker for good

Harley Quinn cuts ties with Joker for good

Suicide Squad generated some understandable criticism in showcasing a Stockholm Syndromed Harley Quinn who hadn’t yet learned to free herself from Joker’s abuse. But with Margot Robbie calling the shots on her spinoff films, it appears as if the fierce character of Harley Quinn will be redeemed.

This begs the question: If Birds of Prey is all about Harley cutting ties with the Joker and moving on, will Gotham City Sirens, which comes later, show her blossoming romantic relationship with Poison Ivy? We can only hope.

Birds of Prey – now Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is set for release on February 7, 2020.
