Regardless of how you feel about the Disney live-action remakes, there’s no arguing that they’ve been monster hits for the studio and have helped push the studio into a historic box office year in 2019.

It looks like the next classic Disney animated movie to get the live-action treatment is Bambi. THR is reporting that Disney has hired Captain Marvel writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Chaos Walking writer Lindsey Beer to develop the script for the project.

Sources have also told THR that Disney views the Bambi remake as a companion piece to The Jungle Book and The Lion King, and will employ the same live-action-but-make-it-CGI photorealism used in those two films for Bambi. However, unlike the previous two films (which combined accounted for just over $2.5 billion dollars at the box office), the studio is aware that there is no grandly epic tale in Bambi and has no plans to reframe the story for one. It will be interesting to see Disney’s photorealistic nature approach to a story that is much smaller in scale and scope. Can photorealism create a sense of intimacy? Disney will certainly try.

Robertson-Dworet and Beer are two of the hottest writers in the industry right now. Along with Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman, they run Known Universe, a production banner focused on telling female-fronted genre stories. Beer and Robertson-Dworet currently have a number of scripts in the pipeline, including co-writing the script for Universal’s planned woman-led Fast & Furious spinoff.

As for Disney, the live-action remake train continues: Mulan will be hitting theaters on March 27th. After a round of casting last summer, The Little Mermaid is full steam ahead. Meanwhile, a few live-action remake originals are heading to Disney+, including Peter Pan and Wendy and The Sword in the Stone. Of those two, Peter Pan and Wendy appears to be further along, with reports stating it aims to shoot from April through August in Vancouver; casting is currently underway.
