We’re already into the second month of 2023, and in what is typically a slow month shows no signs of slowing down this year. As Hollywood gears up for the home stretch of awards season, news is bubbling up out of film fests and awards shows. This week brings news of a big DC reboot, a Marvel star wanting a rom-com, the first poster for Fast X, and more.

As always, Atom Insider brings you a few hand-picked stories we think you’ll like. Ready? Let’s dive in.

James Gunn Announces Brand-New DC Slate of Movies & TV Shows

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as co-CEOs of DC Studios, it was clear that the DCU as we know it it would be board-wiped (again), with a rebuild on the way. This time, however, it seems like it just might work, with Gunn announcing the upcoming slate of DC movies and TV shows, which seem to be more integrated than ever.

Dave Bautista Wants To Star In A Rom-Com

Wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista is best known for his role as Drax the Destroyer in the MCU. At the very least, he’s associated with action, sci-fi, and comedy thanks to his hulking physique and roles in movies like Blade Runner 2049Army of the DeadGlass Onion: A Knives Out Story and Dune. But there’s one genre he’s dying to do: rom-coms.

Speaking to Page Six, Bautista revealed that while he would love to play the romantic lead, he has never been approached for a role in the genre and wonders why:

“I know I’m not your typical rom-com lead. I’m a little rough around the edges. But I always, you know, I look in the mirror and I say, I ask myself, ‘Am I that unattractive? Is there something that unappealing about me that excludes me from these parts?’ I don’t know. It’s just never come my way. I’ve never had an offer to do a rom-com. I still have high hopes. I’ll just keep searching.”

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’d love to see Bautista in a rom-com. What a refreshing change of pace it would be! Here’s to hoping Hollywood is paying attention and an exec already has him on the phone.

Salma Hayek Says Filming One ‘Magic Mike’s Last Dance’ Scene Almost Killed Her

Salma Hayek is no stranger to physically demanding roles. Surprisingly, however, it’s actually her upcoming movie with Channing Tatum that ended up being one of her most dangerous. When filming Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the actress revealed in a hilarious story that it was during the lap dance scene that she got injured – and just narrowly escaped it being a bad injury, at that. She laughs about the mishap that unfolded while filming the steamy scene, but at the time, it was quite dangerous. While speaking to Jimmy Kimmel the other night, she shared the story:

“You know, this one part that’s not in it where I’m upside down, and my legs had to be somewhere. But upside down, one loses sense of direction, and I didn’t do what I was supposed to do, so in the rehearsal, I went like, head down, almost hit my head. [Tatum] held on to my pants, but I was really concerned because my pants were going away, and I couldn’t remember if I had underwear or not in this moment. So, instead of putting my hands to protect my head, I just held onto the pants. He’s like, ‘Put your hands up,’ and I’m like, ‘No, no, no, no.’ Everybody came in, and kind of took me away from him, and he said, ‘What’s wrong with you?’ I said, ‘What’s wrong with me? You nearly killed me!’”

Thankfully, nothing too terrible happened to her during that accident and it’s funny to look back at now. Just know when you see Magic Mike’s Last Dance that Salma Hayek put it all on the line to make those dance scenes as hot as possible.

‘Bad Boys 4’ Is A Go; Begins Production

When Will Smith and Martin Lawrence said “bad boys for life,” it seems they meant it: Bad Boys 4 is officially a go. So much so, in fact, that it’s already in pre-production at Sony. Smith and Lawrence revealed on social media that they met at the studios with Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who will be directing the fourth installment off a script by Chris Bremner.

The last movie in the franchise, Bad Boys for Life, hit theaters in January 2020, just a few months before Covid shut everything down. It made more than $426 million at the worldwide box office on a budget of $90 million, also snagging the second-best MLK weekend opening ever. Clearly, the love for the franchise is still there. It will be exciting to see what the creative team cooks up for Bad Boys 4.

And last but not least…
