Each week on Atom Insider, we’re giving you the heads-up on the biggest and most talked about films arriving in theaters.

We’re still in the middle of the post-holiday lull at the movies; January hasn’t traditionally been a big month at the box office as moviegoers get back into the swing of things at work and school. Still, there are a few movies hitting theaters this week that will scratch the itch for heartwarming stories if that’s your thing.

The Inspirational Film

First, The Upside. This new comedy-drama from STX stars Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, and Nicole Kidman. It’s an American remake of the 2011 French film titled The Intouchables, and it follows the story of a wealthy paraplegic (Cranston) who hires a former felon (Hart) as his caretaker.

Directed by Neil Burger (Limitless, Divergent) and written by Jon Hartmere, The Upside looks like a lighthearted film about mismatched friendships between people of different backgrounds and class structures. So basically Green Book, but set in the modern day.

The (Other) Inspirational Film

Next, A Dog’s Way Home. This new family film from Sony Pictures is based on the best-selling book by W. Bruce Cameron (A Dog’s Purpose), in which a lost dog (voiced by Bryce Dallas Howard) must travel 400 miles to find her owner (played by Jonah Hauer-King).

Directed by Charles Martin Smith (Air Bud, Fifty/Fifty, Dolphin Tale) and co-written by W. Bruce Cameron and Cathryn Michon, A Dog’s Way Home looks like a solidly sweet version of Homeward Bound made for a brand-new audience. The full cast also includes Ashley Judd, Edward James Olmos, Wes Studi, Alexandra Shipp, and more.

The Alternative Sci-Fi

The third notable release this week is Replicas, a new science-fiction thriller from Entertainment Studios starring Keanu Reeves, Alice Eve, and Thomas Middleditch. This one premiered at the Night Visions International Film Festival in November after a private screening was shown at the Toronto International Film Festival. The story revolves around a scientist, played by Reeves, who tries to resurrect his dead family members by cloning them.

Directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff (Traitor, Hollywood Palms), written by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen), and based on a story by Stephen Hamel, Replicas looks like the sort of indie sci-fi that film lovers dream of during the cold winter months.
