Gina Rodriguez Is The New ‘Miss Bala’

In 2011, Gerardo Naranjo’s Miss Bala opened to universal acclaim, and we now have an American remake from Sony/Columbia with Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation, Smallfoot) in the titular role. Translated as Miss “Bullet,” Miss Bala follows the tale of an American makeup artist who gets caught up in a crime war between the Mexican drug cartel and the DEA.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown, Twilight, Miss You Already) and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, this one looks like a high-octane action thriller with a few surprises along the way. The cast also includes Anthony Mackie, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Aislinn Derbez, Matt Lauria, and Thomas Dekker.

Mads Mikkelsen Gives Death The Cold Shoulder In ‘Arctic’

Bleecker Street Films releases Arctic this weekend in select theaters, and early positive reviews from last year’s Cannes Film Festival make the case for audiences to see this survival thriller when they can. Mads Mikkelsen stars as Overgård, a man who is stranded in the Arctic after a plane crash. What follows is a struggle to survive some of the most inhospitable conditions on Earth while making his way back to civilization.

This is the first feature-length film from Joe Penna, a Brazilian musician and filmmaker known for the YouTube channel MysteryGuitarMan. He also co-wrote the film with Ryan Morrison. This looks like a brutal yet satisfying experience in a setting many films don’t usually come close to exploring.

Christopher Abbott And Mia Wasikowska Go For The Kill In ‘Piercing’

Universal’s new indie horror thriller Piercing is finally creeping its way into select theaters after premiering at Sundance and several other film festivals last year. Christopher Abbott plays a prostitute-killer who sets his wicked sights on Jackie (Mia Wasikowska), who proves to be far more troublesome than he expected.

Piercing was directed by Nicolas Pesce (his second film after 2016’s The Eyes of My Mother). He also wrote the screenplay, an adaptation of Ryû Murakami’s novel of the same name. This could definitely be a sleeper horror hit considering the high praise coming out of the festival circuit, as well as a strong sophomore effort from Pesce.
