Recently it was announced that Will Smith has departed the now-James Gunn-directed Suicide Squad sequel..remakequel…reboot? But Warner Bros. must have hustled double-time to fill his vacated spot (or, more likely, the news about Smith was held back until they were closer to a replacement) because today brings the news of just who might be filling his shoes – and it’s time to get excited.

THR reports that none other than Idris Elba is currently in talks to replace Smith in the role of Deadshot in The Suicide Squad (not Suicide Squad 2, because remember – remakequel). Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed the news yet, so keep in mind it’s all just rumors until then. But if true, that would be one amazing replacement – and dare I even say a possible upgrade? Don’t get me wrong, Will Smith is fantastic, but depending on how Deadshot is written this go-around, it could be nice to see Elba stretching his acting chops with some deadpan comedy.

With this news, Elba continues to have himself a hell of a year: He’ll soon be the villain in Fast & Furious franchise spinoff Hobbs and Shaw; he just wrapped filming his role as Macavity in an adaptation of CATS; he’s People‘s reigning Sexiest Man Alive; he has two movies and one TV series in pre-production; and he’s set to host this weekend’s SNL.

Oh, and did I mention his side-hustle as a rapper and DJ is alive and well with him dropping ‘Boasty,’ a track he’s featured on? Because he did. Today.

It’s clearly Stringer Bell’s world for the taking. We’re all just living in it.

The Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2021.
