Considered something of a low point in the James Bond franchise, Die Another Day is famously Pierce Brosnan’s least favorite James Bond film in which he appeared as the suave 007. Previous Bond actor Sir Roger Moore has also been vocal about his dislike of it, both of them citing the weak CGI and gadget-heavy storyline as getting too far away from Bond’s darker, more practical roots.

While Brosnan may not have loved it, it was an extremely memorable film for costar Halle Berry, who played NSA agent Jinx Johnson, for a wildly different reason. Speaking to Jimmy Fallon from home, she revealed that she started choking while filming their love scene set in Cuba and Pierce Brosnan had to save her.

Fallon asked Berry, who is known for getting physical in her films, if there were ever a fight scene she did where it was embarrassing, and that’s when she revealed the awkward – and potentially fatal – moment on the set of the James Bond film. “One time I was doing a scene with Pierce Brosnan in Die Another Day,” she explained. “I was supposed to be all sexy, trying to seduce him with a fig — and then I end up choking on it, and he had to get up and do the Heimlich. So not sexy. So not sexy.”

(Fun fact, that love scene had to be trimmed down by seven seconds in order to get a PG-13 rating.)

But that’s not the only physical injury or discomfort Berry withstood while shooting the 2002 film. While filming another scene involving smoke grenades, some debris from the grenades flew into Berry’s eyes and she required a 30-minute operation to remove the debris and clean her eyes out. Her famous bikini scene, shot in Cadiz, appears to be taking place on a tropically warm day, but it was actually miserably cold that day and Berry had to be wrapped in towels and heat pads between takes to keep from freezing her butt off.

Still, it wasn’t all bad for Berry – she left the production for a few days to attend the 2002 Oscars, where she won the Best Actress award for Monster’s Ball.

Even if she hadn’t, Berry is well-versed in stuntwork and fighting, including the hazards that come along with that. “When you go hard, you’re bound to get hurt,” she explained to Fallon. “When you do your own stunts, you’re bound to get hurt.” For John Wick 3, for example, Berry said she trained for five full months in martial arts, attack dog training, gun handling, and other things, and it was “the hardest thing” she’s ever had to do. Broken bones and other dangers are just part of the job. But that’s just one of the reasons Halle Berry is Halle Berry and we’re just the mere mortals sitting on our couches and reading about her.
