The movies of the MCU might have all been bumped back by a year or more, but that hasn’t stopped some of the ladies of Marvel from finishing another ass-kicking movie of their own.

STXFilms’ action-thriller Gunpowder Milkshake has flown under the radar to this point, but that should change today. The studio and star Karen Gillan (Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jumanji franchise) shared the first-look photos from the movie, and let me tell you, the cast. is. stacked: Along with Gillan, the movie stars Angela Bassett (Black Panther), Lena Headey (Game of Thrones), Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Carla Gugino (The Haunting of Bly Manor), Chloe Coleman (My Spy), Paul Giamatti (San Andreas, Jungle Cruise), Ralph Ineson (The Green Knight, Guardians of the Galaxy), Adam Nagaitis (The Terror, Chernobyl) and Michael Smiley (The Nun, Dead Still).

Here are the first-look images from the movie:

That is an awful lot of women who seem like they mean business. Israeli filmmaker Navot Papushado is on director duties with a script he co-wrote with Ehud Lavski. It tells the story of three generations of women assassins who team up over the course of a night to stop a cycle of violence and break free of those who control them.

Gillan plays Sam, who was only 12 years old when her assassin mother, Scarlet (Headey) was forced to abandon her. Sam is taken in and raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate that had employed her mother. Now an adult, Sam has followed in her missing mother’s footsteps, becoming an elite hitwoman in her own right, using her skills to clean up The Firm’s messes. She’s an efficient, loyal soldier for the cause.

But when a job goes sideways (and don’t they all in assassin movies?), Sam must choose between her loyalty to The Firm and protecting an innocent, 8-year-old girl, Emily (Coleman). Sam is now the number one target of her former employers and the only way she’ll get out alive is if she tracks down her mother and her associates, a deadly group of women known as The Librarians (Bassett, Yeoh, Gugino). Together, these three generations of assassins must quickly set aside their differences and work together, because The Firm is coming for them and they won’t stop until every single one of them is dead.

Papushado isn’t well-known to American audiences, but his previous films, Rabies and Big Bad Wolves, have a clear throughline of relationships between people being tested in violent and extreme circumstances. Gunpowder Milkshake has the potential to put him in front of a larger American audience and get his foot in the door of doing bigger Hollywood movies.

At the moment, Gunpowder Milkshake is expected in theaters in 2021, though an exact release date has not yet been set. Considering we’ve gotten the first batch of photos, we can likely expect it will drop earlier next year rather than later. It has sleeper hit in January or February written all over it.
