Movie musicals are in right now, one of the hottest genres in Hollywood. It seems like almost every major studio has one recently under its belt or is in the process of developing one or more musicals.

Disney is leading the pack, first with its live-action remakes of its classical animated films, bringing Hamilton to Disney+, and bringing Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story to screens via 20th Century Fox later this year. But they have one movie musical project brewing that is completely original and unexpected.

Variety is reporting that Disney is in the process of developing All Night Long, a movie musical based on the songs of Lionel Richie. The plan is to use Richie’s greatest hits in a live-action musical with the aim of a theatrical release. Richie and his manager Bruce Eskowitz will produce, along with Dana Brunetti and Matt Del Piano of Cavalry Media. Pete Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians, The Proposal) is currently hammering out the script.

Lionel Richie is an American treasure. As a child of the ’80s I definitely grew up obsessed with “Dancing on the Ceiling,” and dropped everything to watch the music video whenever I saw it. What can I say? Six-year-old me was hugely into the idea of a man who could walk upside-down on the ceiling. (VFX clearly not a concept I’d been introduced to yet.)

But even I have to admit this is a concept out of left-field – which isn’t a bad thing, just an unexpected thing. Richie, however, was apparently the one to bring the pitch to Disney himself back in January. He already has a connection with Disney, being a judge on American Idol, which airs on Disney-owned ABC.

There’s no word yet on whether or not it will be more of a biopic-style musical in the vein of Rocketman, which told the story of Elton John’s life while using his music, or a tribute anthology like Mamma Mia!, which is based on songs from the ABBA discography. Movie musicals have done both big business and big awards buzz in recent years, and with such a deep well of hits to draw from as Richie’s songbook, it will be really intriguing to see the shape it takes.
