Despite some wobbles in the past few years, comic book movies still continue to be big business. In 2024, there aren’t as many superhero movies hitting theaters, but the three big superhero studios – Marvel, DC, and Sony – each have at least one big movie coming out this year. There are a few origin stories for brand-new heroes, two anticipated sequels, and one movie that just may reboot the entire MCU.

Here are all the superhero movies hitting theaters in 2024.

Madame Web

Release Date: February 14, 2024

Continuing Sony’s spin on taking Spider-Man villains and supporting characters from the comics and making them heroes of their own movies, Madame Web tells the origin story of one of Marvel’s more mysterious characters. Dakota Johnson stars as Cassandra Webb, a Manhattan paramedic who discovers she may have clairvoyant and precognitive abilities. Her painful past finds her crossing paths with three young women who are destined to play important parts in future events. As she steps into her power, Cassandra and the other three women have to navigate dangerous territory.

Deadpool 3

Release Date: July 26, 2024

Deadpool 3 might be the most anticipated of all the movies on this list. Marvel Studios, arguably wisely, is pulling back on releasing so many movies in 2024 to retool its plans for the future. With that, there have been rumors that Deadpool 3 is set to be a soft reboot of the MCU, particularly as not much is known about the plot details. What is known is that it will finally see Ryan Reynolds’ Wade Wilson, a.k.a. Deadpool, team up with Hugh Jackman’s Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine. They cross paths and team up to defeat an opponent – and, yes, they will have the same bickering dynamic that they do in the comics.

Kraven the Hunter

Release Date: August 30, 2024

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter follows the story of Sergei Kravinoff, one of Spider-Man’s more complex foes in the comics. In a slight departure from the comics, Kraven is imbued with animalistic powers and is fashioned as a conservationist and someone who wants to protect the natural world. Just like the comics, however, Kraven is determined to be the greatest hunter in the world – but who and what he’s hunting remain to be seen. In any case, Sony has promised (and the trailer confirms) that it will be a hard R rating.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Release Date: October 4, 2024

Joker was one of the biggest movies of 2019, so naturally, a sequel was in order. That sequel is arriving in the form of the thriller musical Joker: Folie à Deux. Todd Phillips is returning to direct, and Joaquin Phoenix will reprise his role as the titular character Arthur Fleck/Joker. Joining him this time is Lady Gaga as Dr. Harleen Quinzel, a.k.a. Harley Quinn, Joker’s former therapist-turned-lover. The story picks up after the events of the first Joker movie, where Arthur murders talk show host Murray Franklin on live TV. When he’s locked up in Arkham Asylum, he meets Dr. Quinzel. As the two fall in obsessive love and D.A. Harvey Dent builds a case against Arthur, Harley grows determined to save her lover.

Venom 3

Release Date: November 8, 2024

Of all the movies on this list, we know the least and have seen the least about Venom 3. It’s understandable, as the threequel isn’t releasing until late in the year, having been pushed back from its original release date in July. There are a couple of things that hint that it might be the best – certainly the most interesting – of the Venom trilogy so far. Star Tom Hardy’s longtime creative partner and writer, Kelly Marcel, is set to make her directorial debut, and a few big names in the form of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Juno Temple have also joined the cast. Considering the cameo Eddie Brock/Venom made in the post-credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the story may very well tie into that tease.
