A remake of Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger with a female lead, from the director of A Girl Walks Home Alone a Night? Sign. Us. Up.
Deadline reports that producer Neal Mortiz (The Fast & Furious movies and the original Cliffhanger) and director Ana Lily Amirpour are heading to the Cannes Film Festival to secure financing for this remake of Renny Harlin’s 1993 action movie guilty pleasure. The original film starred Stallone as a mountain climber with demons, who has to stop John Lithgow and his gang of bad guys from stealing $100 million scattered along perilous high-altitude terrain.
The remake will have a female lead that will soon be cast. Whomever that lucky actor is, they will star opposite Jason Momoa, who will have a cameo in the new film. (Dollars-to-donuts, we bet Aquaman will play the female lead’s lover and suffer a similar fate to the character in Stallone’s movie that sent his character to a very brooding place.)

Mortiz has tried to get a Cliffhanger remake in front of cameras for years, and he couldn’t have found a better filmmaker than Amirpour (who Iran-set vampire drama Girl is amazing). Working from a script by Creed II co-writer Sascha Penn, this is the first movie of this size that the director has tackled. She will absolutely crush it.
