In the wake of Chadwick Boseman’s untimely passing on Friday, Warner Bros., Legendary and AMC Theatres are teaming up for a really special tribute: His movie, 42, will be re-released this week.
Starting Thursday, September 3rd, movie will play in more than 300 AMC locations across the United States. Even better, tickets are only $5.
The decision to re-release the film comes after the theater chain surveyed its customers about their favorite Boseman performance (aside from Marvel’s Black Panther) and 42 topped the list.
The 2013 biopic about African-American baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson was Boseman’s breakout role. Though the movie itself played it safe and conventional as a straightforward biopic, it was Boseman’s intense, self-contained performance as Jackie Robinson, the first Black man to play in the MLB, that made it memorable. Despite that performance, the scene that most people remember is when Robinson finally snaps after enduring an endless barrage of racism from the white baseball players he faced.
Boseman purposely letting his control slip as he smashed a baseball bat against the walls of the locker room tunnel and broke down in sobs before regaining his control was a glimpse into his prodigious range and raw talent as an actor and a sign of the great things to come.
It was also an indicator of the types of stories he wanted to tell. Boseman made it his purpose early on in his career to dedicate himself to portraying Black icons and telling Black stories that were too little told. 42 was the embodiment of everything Boseman stood for as a deeply gifted actor who used his talents to become an activist through his art. It’s fitting this is the movie that fans chose and that AMC Theatres is re-releasing.
Boseman was most recently seen in Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods as the tragic, inspirational Stormin’ Norman. His last movie, which will be released posthumously, is Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, where he plays trumpet player Levee, who was part of famed jazz musician Ma Rainey’s band. It’s set for release sometime later this year on Netflix.
42 is in theaters again this Thursday, September 3rd. Get 42 tickets here.
