Each week on Atom Insider, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, two challengers entered the Top 10 but ultimately flew under last week’s big animated opener.

This Week’s Top Earner – ‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’

For the second week in a row, the DreamWorks Animation film came in first place. Though it dropped 45%, How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World still managed to bring in a solid $30 million in the U.S., bringing its worldwide total to $375.3 million, more than double its reported production budget. If the film keeps this up, it’ll be a sizable success for Universal, but it’s unclear whether or not The Hidden World will have the time and momentum to match up with the previous film of this franchise, which finished at $621 million worldwide.

Second Place  – ‘Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral’

Good news for Lionsgate. The latest Madea film came within shooting distance of The Hidden World with $27 million in the U.S. This is of course despite overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics, but that’s to be expected at this point. The audience for Tyler Perry’s family-focused screwball comedy-dramas is still going strong after 11 films and A Madea Family Funeral doesn’t appear to be any different.

And Third  – ‘Alita: Battle Angel’

Is a sequel happening? Hard to tell at this point. Alita: Battle Angel only brought in $7 million domestically in its third weekend, and with Captain Marvel on the horizon, that’s sure to drop even further before its run is finished. The film’s only chance is China and other markets overseas, which continue to push the film into franchise-worthy territory with $350.4 million overall. If not for the film’s huge production and marketing budgets, a follow-up would all but be guaranteed at this point.

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Top 10

After a month in theaters, The Lego Movie 2 is definitely winding down in a big way. It lost several hundred more theaters this week and made just $6.6 million more domestically ($152.7 million worldwide). Not awesome, but definitely expected with How to Train Your Dragon providing stiff competition.

Warranted or not, thanks to its Oscar win, Green Book raced back into the Top 10, climbing from #11 all the way to #5 with $4.7 million domestic ($188 million worldwide). MGM’s Fighting With My Family sputtered two spots down to #6 with only $4.6 million domestically for $14.9 million total, officially surpassing its reported budget of $11 million.

Like last week, Isn’t It Romantic dropped two spots, this time to #7 with $4.6 million. Warner Bros. is likely flirting with the film being profitable as it now collects over $40 million worldwide off of a $31 million reported budget. Plus, it’s holding strong over What Men Want, which fell further to #9 with only $2.7 million domestic.

Finally, we get to Greta, which debuted at #8. Ouch. The new suspenseful thriller was projected to make at least $6 million, but it only debuted at $4.8 million. The reported budget is not yet public, but considering it was distributed by Focus Features, the film was likely made for less than $10 million so there’s still time for it to make its money back over the next few weeks.

Rounding out the Top 10, we have Happy Death Day 2U, which dropped three spots to #10 with $2.5 million domestic. It’s doubtful the film will die and wake up with better numbers, but Universal should be pleased with the $9 million budgeted film peaking at over $54 million worldwide.

And They’re Out

As expected, Cold Pursuit and The Upside dropped into the teens, but as per usual, The Upside held on stronger despite all odds with $2.07 million domestically for #12. By comparison, Cold Pursuit plummeted seven spots to #15. Run the Race also had an expected pitfall, dropping from #10 to #16 with just $1.3 million domestic.

Check back with Atom Insider later this week as we preview all the new releases hitting theaters this Friday.
