It’s been 15 years since the original Twilight book first sunk its teeth into the hearts of teen (and, ahem, twentysomething) girls and guys everywhereToday the series author, Stephenie Meyer, announced that the long-awaited prequel, titled Midnight Sun, will arrive on August 4 of this year.

This is a big deal for a few reasons. One: the Twilight books and movies were a massive commercial success, selling millions of copies and raking in over $2 billion across all five movies. Two: this prequel has been rumored since part of the manuscript leaked online back in 2008. Three: 2020 has been a rough year for everyone, and we could all use an indulgent escape into the captivating love story of Edward and Bella.

The 627-page book will focus on Edward’s life and tell the story of meeting Bella from his perspective. Naturally, the Twittersphere lit up at today’s announcement and fans did not miss the opportunity to post their reactions to the news.

Reminders to stay calm amidst the excitement were prevalent.

Some took to TikTok for a twerk-happy dance set to the series’ elegant score.

The announcement reignited the great debate of the 2010s.

One user pointed out the pandemic of it all (I think she meant “ironic” but either way it kind of works).

Others speculated on R. Patz’s reaction that he might have to play Edward Cullen again

Especially after Robert Pattinson is set to play Batman

Love it or hate it, there’s no denying that the Twilight saga was a cultural phenomenon that spawned a new generation of the vampire obsessed. It flipped the script on these blood-thirsty beings by portraying them as animal-eating heroes instead of the typical human-killing villains. It also paved the way for other super popular YA book/movie series like The Hunger GamesDivergent and Maze Runner (P.S. – there’s also a Hunger Games prequel book and movie in the works). Will there be a Midnight Sun movie following the book’s releaseMy money’s on yes. But we’ll keep you posted when we hear anything official.
