Neill Blomkamp’s new RoboCop movie will feature the return of something fans haven’t seen in years on the big screen: Robo’s original suit.

While responding to fan questions on Twitter, the District 9 director revealed that RoboCop Returns will have its “half man, half machine, all cop” hero sporting the “1 million% original” suit design first worn by Peter Weller’s Alex Murphy in Paul Verhoven’s 1987 original film. The suit underwent some minor upgrades in 1990’s RoboCop 2 and 1993’s RoboCop 3, but the overall steel/titanium finish remained the same. See the director’s tweet below:

This return to the classic Robo gear is a welcome departure from the sleek, black suit featured in the forgettable 2014 RoboCop remake.

Blomkamp also provided fans with an update on the script for the legacy sequel, which will be to the 1987 original what 2018’s Halloween was to John Carpenter’s classic ’70s slasher.

“Script is being written,” the director wrote. “Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film.” Justin Rhodes (Terminator: Dark Fate) is helping rewrite the script.

Blomkamp’s RoboCop movie has been in development since July 2018, when Deadline announced that it would be based on a previous script written by original RoboCop screenwriters Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner. The production is keeping story specifics locked down, but we do know the plot’s vague logline: “Anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption.”

Yup, sounds like a RoboCop movie.

So why has it taken more than 30 years for this sequel to finally happen? As Neumeier explained to Deadline:

“Verhoeven felt at the time that making one would be de classe and he wasn’t interested in the politics of a sequel. Then, the writers strike came along in 1988, and we were force majeured off the project. They brought in Frank Miller on a waiver. He wrote a draft and then another with Walon Green, and it got made by Irvin Kershner, who directed The Empire Strikes Back.”

No release date has been set for RoboCop Returns, but we’ll keep you posted.
