A historical epic about the first African samurai has just cast an Avenger.

Avengers: Endgame and Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman has signed on as the lead in Yasuke, a movie about the first African samurai ever to set foot on Japanese soil. Deadline has the casting exclusive.

This Yasuke movie is different from the one announced a few weeks ago that MGM is developing. Producer Mike De Luca (under his De Luca Productions banner) is busy ramping this competing movie up for production and the real-life story behind it promises to be one of the most must-see films to come out of Hollywood in some time.

Yasuke was a Portuguese Mozambique native who was taken to Japan as a slave by Jesuit missionaries. The first black man to enter Japan, his arrival caught the attention of Nobunaga, a vicious warlord. At the time, Nobunaga struggled to unite his splintered country under his banner. Through this struggle, Yasuke and Nobunaga forged a complicated friendship that soon earned Yasuke the honor of being a samurai.

“The legend of Yasuke is one of history’s best-kept secrets, the only person of non-Asian origin to become a Samurai,” Boseman said in a statement. “That’s not just an action movie, that’s a cultural event, an exchange, and I am excited to be part of it.”

The script is being written by Narcos co-creator Doug Miro.

Boseman can next be seen in the action thriller 21 Bridges, in theaters July 12.
