RIP, Mystique?
The second trailer for Fox’s upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix has dropped and it had a surprise twist that appeared to be…well, a huge spoiler. The demise of Jennifer Lawrence’s character seems to be what the new trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix strongly hints as to the reason why our X-Men are assembled at a funeral at some point in the story. (This is the second time Marvel Comics’ Dark Phoenix storyline was adapted to the big screen that involved a death in the mutant family.)
Though judging by the explosive action packed into this trailer, it looks like any one of Charles Xavier’s students could be on the chopping block. Long-time X-Men movies writer Simon Kinberg makes his feature directorial debut here, which serves as a mulligan of sorts for the storyline that he helped create in 2006’s maligned X3. Dark Phoenix centers on Jean Grey (Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner) struggling to reconcile her new and destructive powers when a mysterious figure (played by Jessica Chastain) enters Jean’s life with the hopes to wield the powers that the young mutant possesses. The fallout of this encounter sends the X-Men into space (finally!) for the first time on the big screen.
Returning for what is expected to be the final X-Men movie featuring this cast are franchise staples James McAvoy as Professor X, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, and Nicholas Hoult as Beast.
Dark Phoenix hits theaters June 7. Get your tickets here.
