The First Trailer For 'Detective Pikachu' Has Dropped And It's Full Of Ryan Reynolds

For a few years now, fans of Pokémon have been eagerly anticipating the upcoming Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie adaptation. Today, Warner Bros. dropped the first trailer for the movie:

If you did a double take and swore you could hear Deadpool’s voice coming out of Pikachu’s body, don’t worry, you’re not losing it. It is indeed the dulcet, sarcastic tones of Ryan Reynolds bringing to life the fuzzy little furball previously known for squeaking nothing more than “Pika pika!” But the weirdness of the fluffy yellow Pokémon having the voice of the man best known for playing an ultraviolent mercenary with a sick sense of humor somehow…works? We think it works. It brings a zany sense of fun to a world populated with strange little critters.

The movie is loosely based on the Great Detective Pikachu video game, where Pikachu is – you guessed it – a detective. Rising star Justice Smith (The Get Down) is playing Tim Goodman, a boy who befriends Pikachu in the game. The storyline for the film looks to follow a similar path, as Pikachu and Tim work together to untangle the mystery of what happened to Tim’s dad, a former police detective in Ryme City, a place where Pokémon and humans (mostly) peacefully coexist. Unlike in the game, however, Tim seems a lot less eager to team up with a talking Pokémon only he can hear and understand.

Smith and Reynolds are part of a talented ensemble cast that includes another rising star in Kathryn Newton (Supernatural, Big Little Lies), who is seen briefly in the trailer with her Pokémon, Psyduck, Ken Watanabe as Detective Yoshida, and Bill Nighy, Suki Waterhouse, and Rita Ora in undisclosed roles. Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Shark Tale) is set to direct, and the script was penned by him and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy), based on an earlier script by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls).

Detective Pikachu will be in theaters on May 10, 2019.
