This week, three new films hit wide release to varying results, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">managing to top the box office in its debut.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 \u2018Angel Has Fallen\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/gracenote\/assets\/1913746.jpg\" width=\"1280\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The third <em>Fallen<\/em> sequel from Lionsgate opened in over 3,200 theaters and scored $21.2 million domestically, which is a slight drop from the debut of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 2016 and significantly less than how well <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olympus Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did in 2013. Despite being a low point for the franchise in terms of box office, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/angel-has-fallen\/242438\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made almost double the amount of last week\u2019s #1 winner, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Boys<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (though just a little less than that film did a week ago).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t have global box office numbers for the film quite yet, but it\u2019s on track to make back its $40 million production budget by the time <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/it-chapter-two\/258092\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It Chapter Two <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">presumably overshadows everything with its debut in early September. If it can make as much as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did internationally just three years ago, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angel Has Fallen <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could very well be a heavenly hit for Lionsgate at the tail end of the summer movie season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second Place\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Good Boys\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1564434285\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/archive\/1564434284466_271749_cops_3.jpg\" width=\"1825\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Universal\u2019s pre-teen version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Superbad<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made $11.7 million in its second week, which is a 45.1% drop despite the film gaining 149 theaters in a weekend that looked ripe for expansion. Worldwide, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/good-boys\/271749\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good Boys <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has earned $49 million against a reported $20 million budget, making it a clear success when compared to other raunchy teen comedies from the past year, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booksmart,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which made less than half that amount over the course of its entire 11-week run.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And Third\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Overcomer\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/images.atomtickets.com\/image\/upload\/h_960,q_auto\/v1565285692\/ingestion-images-archive-prod\/archive\/1565285691893_273819_cops_3.jpg\" width=\"1439\" height=\"960\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest faith-based film from Affirm and Sony performed adequately for its genre this weekend, grossing $8.2 million in over 1,700 theaters. That\u2019s a better debut than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nativity Story <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2006 and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">God\u2019s Not Dead 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2016, plus it\u2019s a significantly stronger opening than Affirm\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul, Apostle of Christ <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2018 and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Saints <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 2017.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It doesn\u2019t look like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/overcomer\/273819\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overcomer <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will have much of a presence if at all internationally, but the Christian drama has already blown past its reported $5 million budget. Assuming there\u2019s a sequel in the near future, we can all start speculating about what they\u2019ll overcome next time. Coaching tennis?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the Top 10 ranges in earnings between $5 million (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Upon a Time in Hollywood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at #10) and $8.1 million (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at #4). The only other new wide release on the list is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/ready-or-not\/281763\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready or Not <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from Fox Searchlight, which opened at #6 with $7.5 million, though this number has to be quantified by the film\u2019s early Wednesday release date.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready or Not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has made $10.6 million in less than a week with a low reported budget of $6 million. With that number taken into account, the film is actually one of the strongest openings ever for the studio, with a debut similar to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28 Days Later <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost everything else in the Top 10 dropped about three spots in the rankings. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hobbs &amp; Shaw <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Universal) was #2 last week, but now it\u2019s at #5 behind <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lion King <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Disney), which has held on to the Top 5 for six weeks now. Though it\u2019s underperforming domestically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/box-office-insider-hobbs-shaw-scary-stories\/\">the <em>Fast and Furious<\/em> spinoff has fared far better overseas<\/a>, collecting a total of $588.1 million worldwide after a month at the box office<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Angry Birds Movie 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sony) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Lionsgate) fell out of the Top 5 this week, but both films have managed to pay back their reported production budgets, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scary Stories <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">turning out to be a surprise hit with $72 million worldwide. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angry Birds 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, by comparison, has earned $74.6 million worldwide, but with a larger budget and most of that money coming from overseas ticket sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dora and the Lost City of Gold <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Paramount) is in a similar situation to both those films. It\u2019s made $60.4 million worldwide after three weeks at the box office. On the plus side, most of that money is domestic. On the negative side, its outsized budget of $49 million might keep it from turning a profit now that school\u2019s back in session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, we have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once Upon a Time in Hollywood <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sony) at #10, which could stay planted in the Top 10 next week due to a lack of major new releases. Regardless, the Tarantino film has done well these past five weeks, making $239.7 million worldwide against a reported $90 million budget. It needed to make close to that amount in order to satisfy heavy production and marketing costs, but it\u2019s a hit all the same as Tarantino\u2019s second highest-grossing film both domestically and overall behind <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Django Unchained<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">47 Meters Down: Uncaged<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Entertainment Studios) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blinded by the Light <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Warner Bros.) had short-lived life-spans in the Top 10, dropping out completely in just their second week, despite both films still playing in over 2,000 theaters each. By comparison, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Peanut Butter Falcon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is playing in fewer than 1,000 theaters and managed to outperform <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blinded by the Light <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this weekend, which has only made about half its reported production budget so far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Art of Racing in the Rain <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Fox) also fell off the Top 10 after just three weeks at the box office. We don\u2019t know the exact budget of the film, but it\u2019s likely a flop after making just $25.2 million against a budget that could be as high as $50 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s it for this weekend.
