{"id":9488,"date":"2019-07-24T14:20:54","date_gmt":"2019-07-24T21:20:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/?p=9488"},"modified":"2019-07-31T10:05:22","modified_gmt":"2019-07-31T17:05:22","slug":"the-complicated-power-of-fandom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/the-complicated-power-of-fandom\/","title":{"rendered":"The Complicated Power Of Fandom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fandom is\u2026 complicated.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0I know that\u2019s a b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">old statement<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for a behavior surrounding\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">humans, a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0species that somehow manages to be the most complex and the most infuriatingly basic all at once.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The power of fandom is great, and that\u2019s not always a good thing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A quick look through Twitter will pull up countless accounts proclaiming \u201cfandom is a cancer,\u201d or other reductive statements lumping together all of fandom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for the actions of the few from within. But h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ere\u2019s the problem with those few: they\u2019re very loud.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Yeah, Okay, Let&#8217;s Get This Out Of The Way: A Small But Loud Percentage Of Fandom Can Be Toxic<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some fandoms have larger percentages of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">toxicity, such as the morphing of GamerGate into the alt-right-led ComicsGate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and issues among the anime fandom seemingly ever-present. But, whether the percentage is big or small, every fandom\u2019s got \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">em<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">BatBros<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0corner the DC market, while men\u2019s rights activists recently latched onto Captain Marvel, calling her a villain for standing up for herself after countless male protagonists (and actors) have behaved worse for decades.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Star Wars has had its own share of nightmares, usually involving backlash surrounding one particular character from a given trilogy or that a particular movie didn&#8217;t tell the story they wanted it to.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We see it in fan entitlement, most recently seen in the\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">backlash,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0going on for years with those who have demanded that DC \u201crelease the Snyder Cut.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hate to burst\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anyone\u2019s bubble, but that\u2019s not how television works, and there is no Snyder Cut.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s one thing to be upset something didn\u2019t go your way. We\u2019ve all had finales that have disappointed us. The thing is, it\u2019s not our art. We don\u2019t get to dictate how it ends.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This is literally why\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fanfiction<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0exists! Go write your own ending. Or do something like GoT actor Emilia Clarke, and start your own charity organization:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">About 2,000 people donated to Emilia Clarke&#39;s charity, since the campaign launched last week.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a far cry from the 1.6 million fans who signed the petition to remake the final season of &quot;Game Of Thrones,&quot; but, hey, it\u2019s a start. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XZVhdnGXbr\">https:\/\/t.co\/XZVhdnGXbr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Los Angeles Times (@latimes) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/latimes\/status\/1134067258408484866?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 30, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<h2>Fans Have Also Been A Force For Good &#8211; It Just Doesn&#8217;t Get The Same Coverage<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So, where\u2019s all this going? Mostly I just wanted to get all of the bad out of the way so that we can talk about the fact that fandom is good, and a few sniveling children aren\u2019t going to take away the innate potential for positive change within it. This isn\u2019t a #NotAllFans situation. It\u2019s a refusing to let something that has done great things be hijacked by a few\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">very\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">loud\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">upstarts\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who think they\u2019re entitled to everything always conforming to what they want<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Let\u2019s start small-scale: fan outcry has saved a whole lot of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">media<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. I know I said\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201csmall,\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0but please take a second to understand just how many jobs that is.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Sense8, Brooklyn 99,<\/span><\/i><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Timeless\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are just a few from recent memory.\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Veronica Mars\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fans\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">crowdfunded<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0not just an entire film in record time, but two books, as well. Because of that positive outcry, the series also got a revival season, which recently dropped on Hulu.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Those passionate voices can be, and often are, used for good.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The Stars Of The CW Are Perhaps The Most Charitable Group In All Of Hollywood<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_9500\" style=\"width: 897px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9500\" class=\"wp-image-9500 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/supernatural.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"887\" height=\"447\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/supernatural.png 887w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/supernatural-300x151.png 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/supernatural-768x387.png 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/supernatural-500x252.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-9500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The cast of &#8216;Supernatural&#8217; in a group photo promoting their marathon for charity (Courtesy: Misha Collins)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">re a film\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">site, but I can\u2019t talk about the positive change that fandom has brought about without at least acknowledging what\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supernatural<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has done for the world.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Misha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Collins, Jensen\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ackles<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, Jared\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Padelecki<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and the rest of the Supernatural Family haven\u2019t just founded or raised millions for charities like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.randomacts.org\/\">Random Acts<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GISHWHES\">GISHWHES<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twloha.com\/blog\/jared-padalecki-always-keep-fighting\/\">To Write Love on Her Arms<\/a>, and dozens of others, they\u2019ve also created a sturdy support network that focuses on <a href=\"https:\/\/geekandsundry.com\/jensen-ackles-and-misha-collins-help-launch-the-spnfamily-crisis-support-network\/\">mental health awareness and emotional support<\/a>. In fact, at <a href=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/san-diego-comic-con-2019-highlights\/\">their very last San Diego Comic-Con Hall H panel<\/a> this weekend, the last thing Collins said to their audience was to ask them to remain a family long after the show ends, and to continue to do good in the world in the name of the #SPNFamily. That&#8217;s powerful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They\u2019re not the only ones at the CW Network doing good, either. Stephen\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Amell<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0raised so much money for the charity <a href=\"https:\/\/www.letsfcancer.com\/\">F*** Cancer<\/a> that they literally made him a board member. Do those fandoms contain a few buttheads? Oh yeah, you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">betcha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. But the good that they\u2019ve brought about in this world is far greater.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Playing Heroic Roles Has Helped Actors &#8211; And Their Fans &#8211; Become Real-Life Superheroes<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9501\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/peter-parker-tony-stark.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some folks take superhero roles as just a job, and there\u2019s nothing ostensibly wrong with that. But then there are the actors who see the mantle they\u2019ve taken on as a sort of responsibility. I know I\u2019m talking about the actors and not the fandom here, but there\u2019s a point coming. Kindness begets kindness, and those who see their roles as a responsibility have helped inspire generations of fans. I\u2019m from Aurora, (yes, that one), and when our theater was shot up, Christian Bale and his wife got on a plane notifying neither their publicists or the media. It didn\u2019t stay quiet for long, but when it did get out, Bale simply asked that he and those in mourning be given privacy so that they could pay their respects. Grieving people who had just seen the worst that something they loved could inspire were immediately shown the best of it.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Meanwhile, you see hero after hero heading to hospitals to visit sick children. This is once again a direct action of the actor rather than fandom as a whole, but think of what that kindness can inspire. \u201cIt\u2019s just hope,\u201d is such an easy and flippant thing to say. But the thing about hope is that it can change the whole world. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/501st_Legion#Charitable_works\">the 501st Legion<\/a>, for example. They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0might look like a bunch of stormtrooper baddies, but they do their best to use the Empire to do good<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0alongside their sister organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rebel_Legion#Charitable_work\">The Rebel Legion<\/a>.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0With over 13,000 active members all over the world, the 501<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has donated over 500k man hours since 2016 and raised over $2 million for their respective charitable causes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Inspired by the 501<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and The Rebel Legion is\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Star Wars:\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Force for Change. While this one is officially run by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lucasfilm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and Disney, their donations come from the fans. The organization raised $4.2 million in its first year alone, and has since expanded as the third trilogy has grown in popularity. That\u2019s a whole lot of credits, and that\u2019s just between the three biggest Star Wars-centric charitable organizations.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Which Fandom Is Next? Looking At You, Marvel<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Who\u2019s next? Marvel seems like the right direction in which charitable fandom could head. We\u2019ll keep it limited to the movies (though I do highly recommend you look up the charitable impact of Stan Lee\u2019s life). The MCU<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has a whole host of activists involve<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d in its ranks, all of which have used their involvement with the franchise to drive awareness and participation in things like standing against global warming, ending childhood hunger, addiction awareness, voting initiatives, and a hell of a lot more.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Remember that one year we were all exhausted by the Super Bowl because no one who doesn\u2019t live in Seattle or Boston wants a Seahawks vs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Patriots game?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Chris Evans and Chris Pratt used everyone\u2019s exhaustion and turned it into something good, driving fans to donate to Christopher\u2019s Haven and Seattle Children\u2019s Hospital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/chris-evans-chris-pratt-bet-779962\">during their epic Super Bowl bet<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Meeting Captain America and Star-Lord is an experience our patients will always remember. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TwitterBowl?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TwitterBowl<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/iDJWJ4UGbs\">pic.twitter.com\/iDJWJ4UGbs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Seattle Children&#39;s (@seattlechildren) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/seattlechildren\/status\/574364093873659904?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2015<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Cosplayers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0around the world dress up as their favorite characters across fandoms to donate their time to charity around the world. You can\u2019t go to a political march without seeing the hope that the Rebellion of\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Star Wars\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">has inspired. Representation in media might bring out some crappy comments from a few sour grapes, but it also shows fans who have rarely seen themselves represented on screen that they can be a powerful instrument for change, helping drive inclusivity and goodwill among their fan community.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What I\u2019m saying here, is that fandom\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">evolves and can even save lives. Bitter folks who have \u201cgrown out\u201d of the fandoms they refuse to abandon can grouse all they want. There\u2019s not a snarky fan-petition so strong or bigoted group so loud that we should allow a word that has inspired such positive change to be coopted by negativity.
