We’ve collected all the biggest highlights and best moments from this year’s SDCC for you here.

1. ‘Supernatural’ Holds Its Last Hall H Panel Ever

After 15 (yes, fifteen!) seasons, Supernatural will finally be saying goodbye. It was the first TV show to start attending San Diego Comic-Con, and arguably the brand that ushered in the modern-day coolness of SDCC. Lots of credit is given to Marvel Studios there, but Supernatural actually deserves the lion’s share.

And now it’s coming to a close. In an emotional panel, the cast and creators of the beloved, long-running series spoke about what it has meant to them to have worked on such a rare show for a decade and a half. The three longtime co-leads, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, and third lead, Misha Collins, are some of the most charitable and do-gooding people in the business. So it was fitting that Collins closed out his part of the panel by urging the “Supernatural family” to continue to be a family, as well as a force for good in the world, even after the show ends.

The best part of all? Crew on the show restored a fully working Baby (the Chevy Impala has that has been so integral to the series), complete with a weapons box and Sam and Dean’s initials carved into it, to give away to one lucky fan:

It will be strange to have a world in which Supernatural is done, but what a way to go out. And what a legacy the Winchester boys have left.

2. Marvel Studios Brings The (Love And) Thunder To Hall H

After skipping Comic-Con last year, Marvel was back with a vengeance this year. As always, they owned Hall H with an hour-and-a-half-long panel that covered its upcoming Phase 4 slate of movies as well as the multiple Marvel series that are in development for Disney+.

There are so many highlights from the panel (which you can read about here), so let me break it down by movies and TV series:

MOVIES:

The Eternals director, Chloe Zhao, and cast were announced, including Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Lia McHugh and Don Lee. It hits theaters November 6, 2020.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed the full name of the Shang-Chi movie would be Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. It hits theaters February 21, 2021. Best of all, the new Shang-Chi actor was announced: Simu Liu.

“Hey how was your weekend?”
Me: pic.twitter.com/tQV0QZ8r5u

— Simu Liu (@SimuLiu) July 22, 2019

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson announced the sequel would be titled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and, true to Derrickson’s deep horror roots, would be the first scary movie the MCU has ever seen. Nightmare will be the villain, Scarlet Witch will be part of it, and it hits theaters May 7, 2021.

Taika Waititi returned to announce the fourth Thor movie would be titled Thor: Love and Thunder. Not only that, but Natalie Portman would be returning as Jane Foster – and she’ll become Thor, just like in the comics. It hits theaters November 5, 2021.

The finally confirmed Black Widow movie, directed by Cate Shortland, took the stage. The cast includes Scarlett Johansson (naturally), David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, O-T Fagbenle and Florence Pugh. It hits theaters May 1, 2020.

And, in a surprise announcement, the panel closed with the surprise reveal that a Blade movie is coming, and two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is stepping into the role of the Daywalker. No word yet on when that’s hitting theaters, but expect it to be fast-tracked.

Marvel also confirmed a number of streaming series hitting Disney+, though there is less news on those. Here are the titles confirmed:

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, starring Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan. Daniel Bruhl will reprise his role as Baron Zemo – and he’ll have the iconic purple cowl

WandaVision, starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany. The events of the series will tie directly into Doctor Strange 2.

LOKI, starring Tom Hiddleston. It’s confirmed that it will follow the adventures of the 2012 timeline Loki we saw in Endgame who disappeared with the Tessaract.

What If…? with a newly-announced Jeffrey Wright as the voice of the Watcher. The series of one-offs speculating on various timelines will see over two dozen of the Marvel actors reprising their roles.

Hawkeye, starring Jeremy Renner. It will explore his time as Ronan and, yes, it will also be introducing Kate Bishop.

3. Eddie Furlong To Return As John Connor For ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’

Eddie Furlong as John Connor in ‘Terminator 2: Judgment Day’

The biggest news so far – Edward Furlong will be returning to reprise his role of John Connor in Terminator: Dark Fate. Whaaaaat?? 11-year-old me was in love with Eddie Furlong, so this fills my nostalgic heart with joy. Hopefully, it’s a weighty role and not some walk-on, one-scene cameo. It would be nice to see his career and life get back on track.

Director Tim Miller confirms that his movie will be a more direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, with it dealing with the consequences of Sarah Connor’s actions at the end of the second Terminator film. He also poked some fun at Marvel, saying multiple timelines lessen stakes. So we can expect this film to be truer to the spirit of the original than the last few Terminator films. Sci-fi nerds, rejoice! And don’t worry: it will definitely be an R-rated movie. “The DNA of Terminator is an R-rated f***in’ movie,” Miller declared to laughs.

4. The ‘CATS’ Trailer Hit The Internet; Hilarity Ensued

The anticipated trailer for CATS dropped, and, well…just see for yourself:

That’s…that’s about all I have to say about that.

5. Tom Cruise Delighted Hall H With A Surprise Appearance

After long last, Maverick is back in the pilot’s seat where he belongs. Tom Cruise himself showed up in a surprise appearance after Paramount’s Dark Fate panel to personally deliver the world premiere of the Maverick trailer. I can’t think of a role in which a Tom Cruise character has ever followed the rules as opposed to not playing by the rules, but in the case of Top Gun, it’s warranted. Sign us all the way up:

6. The Planned ‘Walking Dead’ TV Movie Series Will Actually Be Hitting Theaters

At its annual Hall H panel, The Walking Dead brought the goods: The Whisperer War storyline will finally be happening in Season 10. What’s more, it was confirmed that the Andrew Lincoln-led series of spinoff movies, originally scheduled to air on AMC, will now be getting a theatrical release, too.

It’s the teasiest of teasers, but hey, it’s better than nothing.

Another San Diego Comic-Con has come and gone, and once again, it’s been a crazy weekend of news, announcements, and trailers coming from the Gaslamp District.
