Entertainment news, trailers, and tons of movie and TV tidbits will be dropping today and we’ll be covering it. I’m the person manning the Atom fort this week, so every day I’ll be keeping a running article on all the biggest news dropping each day of SDCC. Check back throughout the day as I’ll be regularly updating it with the coolest things coming out of San Diego. If you missed yesterday’s post from Thursday, here it is.

In the meantime, here’s all the biggest news dropping today (that’s Friday):

Netflix Will Debut A Documentary About The Making Of ‘The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance’

Before the rest, take a moment and refresh yourself with the teaser trailer for the series. For those of you who haven’t yet seen it, feast your eyeballs on this beautiful trailer:

Eye-popping, right? Right. Where are my fellow practical effects geeks at? ’80s kids like me grew up on Jim Henson, and part of Henson’s world was and is The Dark Crystal. It’s why we were so pumped when Netflix announced it was returning to the world of Thra, of Gelflings and Skeksis, with The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance series. One of the things that made the original movie so memorable was the practical effects, namely the famous Henson puppetry. At the SDCC panel, the cast and crew revealed that Lisa Henson is following in her father’s footsteps. Age of Resistance will be 100% puppetry with all the sets built elevated to accommodate the puppeteers. No CGI involved, which is great.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate technological breakthroughs and I admire CG artists. But there’s nothing quite like practical puppetry and animatronics, especially in fantasy. It makes the world feel tangible in a way that green screen often feels flimsy, timeless in a way that CG effects can feel dated.

Even better, Netflix plans to debut a documentary about the making of the series after the series premieres. If you’re like me and love reality shows showing the creativity and craftsmanship of people or are naturally inquisitive and love understanding the “how” and “why” of something’s creation, then this will be extremely your ish.

Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ Series Drops A Trailer And Some Updates

Stop whatever you’re doing right now, RIGHT NOW, and watch this magnificence:

Hi, big fantasy RPG gamer nerd here. Netflix’s The Witcher series, starring the-man-formerly-known-as-Superman, Henry Cavill, in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia, has been one of the streaming platform’s most anticipated for a number of reasons: 1. Cavill is a huge name thanks to his turn in the DCEU; 2. The games (and novels) have a huge fanbase; 3. Netflix has been going all-in on high-concept original content. Would it be hit or would it be miss? The trailer makes me think it will be a hit.

Other interesting tidbits from the panel revealed a new look at Roach, Geralt’s trusty horse:

Meet Geralt of Rivia's most trusted companion, Roach. pic.twitter.com/NfJyveZHIs

— The Witcher (@witchernetflix) July 16, 2019

Cavill also confirmed the earlier news that he incessantly pestered the showrunner and producers to cast him as Geralt before the show was even greenlit. That’s how big a fan he is of the games. (Our boy has a well-documented history of being a hardcore gamer.) Cavil went on to explain the character of Geralt is the protagonist, but not a hero. He makes quite a few morally questionable decisions and, in fact, claims the last thing tethering Geralt to his humanity is Roach. Expect this to be dark, real dark. We’re here for it.

‘The Whisperer War’ Storyline Will Finally Happen In ‘The Walking Dead’ Season 10 (And Two Trailers! And More News!)

Before we get to the news, first things first: Check out the intense trailer for The Walking Dead Season 10, a sneak peek that promises all-out medieval war:

Readers of The Walking Dead comics know the Whisperers, a vicious group who disguises themselves in walker skins to get around undetected, have been a longtime antagonist to Rick Grimes & Co. And, well, just about everyone that isn’t the Whisperers. But while they’ve been around for a few TWD series seasons now, fans have been wondering when the show would finally get around to ‘The Whisperer War’ story arc.

After some ish goes down thanks to Negan (always blame Negan), the Whisperers plan revenge. What follows is an all-out assault on both the Hilltop and Alexandria communities. I won’t spoil anything for you here, but just know it’s a major storyline from the comics that fans have been dying to see adapted for the series.

But while Season 10 giveth, it also taketh away: OG cast member Danai Gurira confirmed that this season will be the last for her. While it’s sad, it’s understandable. After appearing in a few MCU movies, Gurira’s star is on the rise – she can’t play Michonne forever. However, it’s a testament to how beloved her character is that she got a standing ovation from Hall H – and a warm hug from co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Negan) when she announced her departure:

Danai just got a standing ovation from Hall H after announcing her departure from #TheWalkingDead pic.twitter.com/yGES4y52MS

— The Walking Dead (@TheWalkingDead) July 19, 2019

BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE!

We also got a teaser trailer for the upcoming, as-yet-untitled Walking Dead movie from AMC and Universal, to cap off the panel. In huge news, the three Andrew Lincoln-led movies won’t air on AMC now but will actually get theatrical releases. WHOA. Check it:

The Russo Bros. Bring A New Trailer For ’21 Bridges’

The Russos had a panel today to talk about wrapping up the Infinity Saga arc for the MCU, but also talk about the new production company they’re launching and their own non-Marvel projects. While they were there, they brought a new trailer for cop drama 21 Bridges, which they are producing. Starring Chadwick Boseman, it tells the story of a disgraced NYPD cop who is given a chance at redemption. Check it out:

The Next Two ‘Halloween’ Movies Have Gotten Release Dates

The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode isn't over. #HalloweenKills #HalloweenEnds @HalloweenMovie pic.twitter.com/l4KT8sUo4q

— John Carpenter (@TheHorrorMaster) July 19, 2019

Last year’s Halloween rebootquel, directed by David Gordon Green, was excellent, one of the rare remake sequels that is faithful to the spirit of the original while being its own, well-crafted thing. There were previous rumors we were getting more from Green, perhaps a trilogy, but now it’s for sure. Universal announced we’re getting two more Halloween movies from the same team, and even gave titles and release dates:

Halloween Kills will be released Friday, October 16, 2020

Halloween Ends will be released Friday, October 15, 2021

Those are all the details we have so far, but expect more in the coming months. In the meantime, we can simply bask in the good news.

Brandon Routh Returning To Play Superman For The CW’s Yearly Crossover Arc

Forget Henry Cavill’s CGI mustache woes in Justice League, the Superman actor who was done the dirtiest was Brandon Routh. He was a great Superman in a bad Superman movie (you can thank Bryan Singer for that), and he never a real chance to shine. But that will be rectified in this year’s annual CW crossover event. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is the storyline for this year, and it will see all five Arrowverse shows partaking: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and brand-new Batwoman.

It’s been revealed that Routh will be reprising his role as the Big Blue Boy Scout. You might be scratching your head – after all, Tyler Hoechlin is the current Superman in the Arrowverse. And he’ll still be there, but, you know… “infinite earths.” Which is even weirder because Routh currently plays The Atom on Legends, so…no idea how that’s all gonna work. We’ll likely get more details on how they’re going to tackle the comic book storyline for the crossover at the panel later today, but for now, it’s enough to know that we’ll be getting not one, but two Supermen sharing the screen together.

The crossover event will last five episodes, with the first three airing before the holiday break and the second two episodes airing when the CW shows return in January 2020.

Shudder’s ‘Creepshow’ Horror Anthology Series Drops An Awesome Trailer

Many, many kids, myself included, grew up on Stephen King. But if you were like me, then it was his short stories and anthologies that creeped you out far more than his novels (with the exception of IT because obviously). So I, for one, was pumped when I heard that they were rebooting King’s Creepshow anthology movies as a series for Shudder. The man himself will be writing an episode – oh, and did I mention The Walking Dead‘s Greg Nicotero is also involved?
