Nakata introduced J-Horror fans to Sadako before she was adopted and madeover stateside, and it was Nakata himself who helmed <em>The Ring Two<\/em>. Why the digestible history lesson? This year Nakata returns to his beloved Japanese franchise with 2019\u2019s <em>Sadako<\/em>, which reimagines the titular demon though a YouTube-frenzied lens. Welcome back, you ruiner of fuzzy wavelength static.<\/p>\n<p>In this sequel, revamp &#8211; however you define <em>Sadako<\/em> &#8211; Nakata\u2019s cursed entity is unleashed by a view-hungry online vlogger. Elaiza Ikeda stars as psychiatrist Mayu Akikawa, and Hiroya Shimizu her hopefully internet celebrity brother, Kazuma. Mayu\u2019s latest patient is a small abandoned child (played by Himeka Himejima) whose mother tried to burn her alive for Sadako related reasons, and Kazuma\u2019s thirst for fame brings him to the scorched apartment. Instead of becoming a viral video sensation, Kazuma goes missing. At the same time, Mayu\u2019s patient starts randomly passing out. Is it all connected? Of course &#8211; and Sadako\u2019s behind it all.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wC784h-bwV4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no US release planned yet for Nakata\u2019s latest Sadako incarnation, with its North American premiere taking place last week as Fantasia Film Festival\u2019s opening night film. Until distribution is announced, here are three reasons to fall victim to another J-Horror curse.<\/p>\n<h2>1) The Haunting Score Elevates Lulls<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9221\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019-400x250.jpg 400w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/sadako-2019.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yes, I\u2019m here praising a horror\u2019s films original music over thrills and screenwriting. Think back to your favorite Italian <em>giallo<\/em> features, maybe something scored by Goblin. Musicianship can add depth to the most mundane moving pictures, <em>Sadako<\/em> a compelling example. The instrumental backing isn\u2019t as lively as <em>Deep Red<\/em> aka <em>Profondo Rosso<\/em>, but it doesn&#8217;t need staccato pep. <em>Sadako<\/em>\u2019s orchestral compositions imbue procedural \u201cghost detective\u201d investigations with an engaging atmosphere, even when the film dips into hazy lulls sans its namesake apparition.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine the most stereotypical horror drama, where characters ride an island ferry and are caught by the camera gazing past oceanic breaklines. A typical representation of contemplation, but in this case, a more heartfelt tragedy given audible accents that slowly crescendo. Noriaki Sugihara\u2019s screenplay favors familial beats rooted in loneliness over what Americans know to be <em>The Ring<\/em> branded scares, and the film\u2019s score heightens overtaking doldrums that replace constant thrillers. <em>Sadako<\/em>&#8216;s score plays a major role in developing characters, building momentum, and ensuring audiences have thematic heft worth following.<\/p>\n<h2>2) An Icon Reborn<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9222\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1-400x250.jpg 400w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, I\u2019ll warn that <em>Sadako<\/em> is punching in a lower weight class than we\u2019re used to. I bring up Samara again because those expecting swampy blue video footage to invade their nightmares will be disappointed, given how Nakata employs slower sentiments and less straightforward scares. That said, <em>Sadako<\/em> revitalizes <em>Ringu<\/em>\u2019s curse for the modern era by adapting to social media. Viral videos are all the rage, and now Sadako herself can be labeled an influencer. Human influencer hubris leads to foolish undertakings, and then to a brand-new curse with limitless trajectories.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sadako<\/em> is a retread in that signature details are swapped or altered, but storytelling remains constant. You\u2019ll be treated to a single throwback sequence where she crawls from out a flickering television set, but otherwise, Sugihara writes fresh backstory lineage that includes an island cavern system, rising tides, and sacrificed children in hopes of appeasing Sadako. Interspliced visions of waterlogged skulls and natural stone openings under moonlight tease fresh beginnings, as talismanic props emphasize old world, mythological backstories. It\u2019s not always successful, failing to tie Kazuma\u2019s ill-fated task with Mayu\u2019s mystery patient, but Nakata\u2019s not just replaying the hits.<\/p>\n<h2>3) Horror Built On Storytelling<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9223\" src=\"http:\/\/blog-proxy.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-1024x640.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-500x313.jpg 500w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1-400x250.jpg 400w, https:\/\/atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/maxresdefault-2-1.jpg 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Nakata\u2019s J-Horror sensibilities veer from what Americans understand mainstream horror to represent. Obvious jump scares are traded for a small psychic child\u2019s entanglement with cursed legends, as Mayu attempts to decipher fact from fiction. When Sadako appears, the cinematography lingers on shots rather than relying on quick cuts. It\u2019s not some cheapo quickie glitch meant for a visual jolt. Horror can be more than the obvious, which Nakata attempts to prove through mythology and shallow milky pools. It\u2019s comfortable for <em>Ringu<\/em> fans, but opens multiple doors for inexperienced viewers.<\/p>\n<p>For better or worse, <em>Sadako<\/em> is back in a new nightmare that\u2019s more a grim lullaby. Temper your expectations. Nakata\u2019s return to the franchise builds upon now-iconic tales in a way that 2017\u2019s <em>Rings<\/em> unsuccessfully attempted. It won\u2019t be for everyone, but those hardcore <em>Ringu<\/em> franchise faithful should find enough in this 2019 rebirth to worship at their beloved altar. She\u2019s back, creaking rigor mortis joints and all.
