Each week on <\/span>Atom Insider<\/span>, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, your friendly neighborhood record-breaker debuted over the July 4th holiday and the following weekend to great reviews and an even greater audience reception.<\/span><\/p>\n

This Week\u2019s Top Earner \u2013 \u2018Spider-Man: Far From Home\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

Sony and Marvel\u2019s latest <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>film starring Tom Holland technically opened last Tuesday, but its domestic run over the three-day weekend was plenty to secure the #1 spot with $93.6 million. <\/span>Far From Home <\/span><\/i>broke the six-day record for a Tuesday release, making $185 million in North America for a total of over $580 million worldwide (thanks in part to a strong debut in China).<\/span><\/p>\n

Far From Home <\/span><\/i>is one of the few sequels to perform well this summer, though it\u2019s hard to fairly compare its opening weekend to other <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>films at large. It had the fourth largest opening weekend for a <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>solo film behind the original <\/span>Spider-Man<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Spider-Man: Homecoming<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Spider-Man 3<\/span><\/i>, but that doesn\u2019t take into account its Tuesday-Thursday box office. Plus, <\/span>Far From Home <\/span><\/i>had the widest release ever for a <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>film at 4,632 theaters domestically, which is almost 1,000 theaters more than the first <\/span>Spider-Man <\/span><\/i>in 2002.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless, <\/span>Spider-Man: Far From Home <\/span><\/i>has a clear path to becoming the next billion-dollar MCU movie, as it only has to make less than double its current total to reach this coveted benchmark. <\/span>Spider-Man: Homecoming <\/span><\/i>fell short just $120 million in 2017, even though it played for 21 weekends, so we\u2019ll have to wait and see if <\/span>Far From Home <\/span><\/i>has at least eight legs.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second Place\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Toy Story 4\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

Disney and Pixar\u2019s <\/span>Toy Story 4 <\/span><\/i>managed to play well throughout the July 4th holiday and the film\u2019s third weekend, making $34.3 million between Friday and Sunday. That\u2019s only a 42.5% drop for the animated film, which is now the sixth highest grossing Pixar film domestically with $306.5 million. Worldwide, it\u2019s the ninth highest grossing Pixar film with $649.9 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

Toy Story 4 <\/span><\/i>still has another two weeks on its own before <\/span>The Lion King <\/span><\/i>opens to challenge its status as the most popular family film in theaters, but it\u2019s proven to be a good performer on weekdays in addition to weekends. The Pixar sequel has a good shot at surpassing <\/span>Finding Nemo <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Inside Out <\/span><\/i>to become the fourth highest grossing Pixar film domestically, but it has a much steeper hill to climb against <\/span>Toy Story 3<\/span><\/i>, which made $415 million domestically over the course of 24 weeks in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Third\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Yesterday\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

Universal\u2019s <\/span>Yesterday<\/span><\/i> proved to be effective counterprogramming for audiences uninterested in the latest Marvel or Disney film. The \u201cwhat if the Beatles never existed\u201d romantic comedy only fell 36.8% this past weekend with $10.7 million domestically. The July 4th holiday apparently carried its weight to $56.9 million worldwide, which is more than double its reported production budget. <\/span>Yesterday <\/span><\/i>won\u2019t reach the box office mania of <\/span>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/span><\/i> or even the lower key of <\/span>Rocketman<\/span><\/i>, but it might just make a living eight days a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n

Annabelle Comes Home <\/span><\/i>(Warner Bros) just couldn\u2019t get audiences to do the same. The <\/span>Conjuring <\/span><\/i>spinoff sequel dropped two spots to #4 and dropped 51.9% in its second weekend, earning just $9.7 million domestically. It has to make another $34 million to catch up to the first <\/span>Annabelle <\/span><\/i>from 2014, not adjusting for inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aladdin <\/span><\/i>(Disney) fell one spot to #5, making $7.6 million domestically after seven weekends at the box office. It\u2019s now less than $80 million away from reaching a worldwide total of $1 billion. Disney is probably wishing for a sequel right about now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Midsommar <\/span><\/i>(A24) debuted at #6 with just $6.5 million domestically and $10.9 million total when including Tuesday-Thursday. Even when accounting for the holiday, <\/span>Midsommar <\/span><\/i>only made about half the domestic opening of Ari Aster\u2019s <\/span>Hereditary <\/span><\/i>from last year. This is one of the worst opening weekends in 2019 for a film in this many theaters, so unless word of mouth picks up, the 2.5-hour horror film likely won\u2019t break $20 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Secret Life of Pets 2 <\/span><\/i>(Universal\/Illumination) dropped two spots to #7 in its fifth weekend, making just $4.7 million domestically in over 2,800 theaters. At $262.4 million worldwide, the sequel will apparently finish its run about $600 million lower than the previous <\/span>Pets <\/span><\/i>film from 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

Men in Black: International <\/span><\/i>(Sony) dropped two spots to #8 in its fourth week, making just $3.6 million domestically. <\/span>Avengers: Endgame <\/span><\/i>(now with extra footage) fell two spots to #9 and is now just $15 million or so away from surpassing <\/span>Avatar <\/span><\/i>after 11 weeks at the box office.<\/span><\/p>\n

And last we have <\/span>Rocketman <\/span><\/i>(Paramount), which fell one spot to #10 in its sixth week. Its worldwide total now stands at $173.8 million, enough to make it the fourth highest grossing musical biopic of all time.<\/span><\/p>\n

And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n

Only two films fell off the Top 10 to make way for the new wide releases. <\/span>John Wick: Chapter 3 <\/span><\/i>(Lionsgate) dropped just one spot to #11, winding down its eight-week run with an impressive $311 million worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Child\u2019s Play <\/span><\/i>(United Artists) fell four spots to #12 in just its third weekend, but it\u2019s probably not a flop, depending on how much was spent on marketing. The film has a low reported production budget of $10 million, and it managed to sneak in about $26.7 million domestically in its brief theatrical window.<\/span><\/p>\n
