And according to the film&#8217;s director, that&#8217;s mostly the reason why he wanted to make it in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/joaquin-phoenix-joker-follow-comics-exclusive\/\"><em>Empire<\/em><\/a> Magazine, Todd Phillips revealed that in a current blockbuster landscape driven by certain comic book storylines being adapted for the big screen,\u00a0<em>The Hangover<\/em> director wants to go the exact opposite direction. If he had a rule for the making of the Joaquin Phoenix-starring Joker movie, it was to ignore comic book lore altogether.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t follow anything from the comic books, which people are gonna be mad about,\u201d said Phillips. \u201cWe just wrote our own version of where a guy like Joker might come from. That\u2019s what was interesting to me. We\u2019re not even doing Joker, but the story of becoming Joker. It\u2019s about this man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t433PEQGErc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/batman-movie-trivia\/\">Tim Burton&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Batman<\/em><\/a>\u00a0gave the Clown Prince of Crime a new origin story \u2013 he killed Bruce Wayne&#8217;s parents \u2013 that was different from anything in the comics at that time<em>.<\/em> In\u00a0<em>The Dark Knight<\/em>, director Christopher and his brother\/co-writer Jonah Nolan famously kept having Joker change up his origin story by being an unreliable narrator when explaining how he got his scars.<\/p>\n<p>But for Phillips, Joker&#8217;s appeal is largely how blank of a slate he is. He and his collaborators embraced that element of the character, using Batman&#8217;s greatest villain as a blank canvas for their envelope-pushing, R-rated fall tentpole.<\/p>\n<p>When it came to casting for the role, Phillips explained that there was no debate; Phoenix was\u00a0<em>the guy<\/em> to put on the clown paint next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think he\u2019s the greatest actor,\u201d the director said. \u201cWe had a photo of him above our computer while we were writing.
