Each week on <\/span>Atom Insider<\/span>, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, yet another \u201cliving toy\u201d movie entered the top 10, along with a romantic comedy, but neither was a match for Woody and the gang.<\/span><\/p>\n

This Week\u2019s Top Earner (For The Second Week In A Row) \u2013 \u2018Toy Story 4\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

We expected Disney and Pixar\u2019s <\/span>Toy Story 4<\/span><\/i> to have strong legs throughout the week and through the weekend, and that turned out to be the case for this summer release. The animated sequel made $57.9 million domestically in its second week, and worldwide, it\u2019s already grossed $496.5 million total. That means in just over a week, <\/span>Toy Story 4<\/span><\/i> has nearly made half the total box office as its predecessor.<\/span><\/p>\n

Toy Story 4 <\/span><\/i>is already the 6th highest grossing film of 2019, as well as the eighth highest-grossing G-rated film ever made. Thanks to its momentum overseas, this will probably be the next Pixar film to cross the $1 billion mark. It looks like Pixar still has a friend in audiences.<\/span><\/p>\n

Second Place\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Annabelle Comes Home\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

The latest <\/span>Annabelle <\/span><\/i>sequel took in just $20.3 million domestically in its opening weekend, making this the weakest debut for all six <\/span>Conjuring <\/span><\/i>universe movies. It made $17 million less than the first <\/span>Annabelle<\/span><\/i> in 2014, not adjusting for inflation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Worldwide,\u00a0Annabelle Comes Home<\/i><\/span>\u00a0has amassed $76.2 million, but it has a long way to go before it can outgross the first <\/span>Annabelle<\/span><\/i>, which finished its run with $257.1 million globally. This might look like a setback for Warner Bros\u2019s <\/span>Conjuring <\/span><\/i>expanded universe, but their strong showing with <\/span>The Nun<\/span><\/i> last year is at least one good sign that audiences are still interested in new spinoff ideas…just, maybe not another one featuring Annabelle.<\/span><\/p>\n

And Third\u00a0 \u2013 \u2018Yesterday\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n

All <\/span>Yesterday<\/span><\/i> needed was some box office love to drown out mixed reviews from critics, but those results were also a bit…mixed. Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis\u2019s \u201cWhat if the Beatles never existed?\u201d musical romantic comedy brought in just $17 million domestically and $24.7 million overall for its debut. Not bad for a film with a reported budget of $26 million, but also not the out-of-the-gate hit Universal was probably hoping for.<\/span><\/p>\n

The real test for <\/span>Yesterday <\/span><\/i>will be July 4th and this coming weekend, as <\/span>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/span><\/i> swings into theaters (already glowing with good reviews). Audiences have proven with films like <\/span>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Rocketman <\/span><\/i>(to a lesser extent) that they\u2019re interested in musically-imbued and nostalgia-laced movies, but <\/span>Yesterday <\/span><\/i>might have a hard day\u2019s week trying to make its case as the movie you need to see in theaters.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office<\/span><\/h2>\n

Aladdin <\/span><\/i>(Disney) dropped just one spot to #4, making $9.3 million in its sixth week. Disney has had no qualms about keeping the film in over 3,200 theaters as the rest of the summer box office competition has floundered, allowing <\/span>Aladdin <\/span><\/i>to essentially walk away with $874.1 million worldwide and counting. That makes it the third highest-grossing film of 2019 behind <\/span>Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i>and <\/span>Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i>, which of course means it\u2019s the second highest-grossing film of the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Secret Life of Pets 2 <\/span><\/i>(Universal\/Illumination) held on to the #5 spot with $7 million domestically in over 3,300 theaters. Worldwide, it\u2019s made $223 million after a month at the box office. At this point, it\u2019s probably safe to assume that <\/span>Pets 2 <\/span><\/i>will be Illumination\u2019s lowest-performing animated film ever, just shy of <\/span>The Lorax <\/span><\/i>from 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n

Men in Black: International <\/span><\/i>(Sony) dropped two spots to #6 in its third week, making just $6.5 million domestically in over 3,600 theaters. Worldwide, the sci-fi film has scored $219 million, but it still needs to make quite a bit more to break even, especially because of its weaker showing in North America.<\/span><\/p>\n

At #7, we have <\/span>Avengers: Endgame<\/span><\/i>, which climbed all the way up from #13 thanks to Disney\u2019s rerelease with bonus material. The Marvel film made $5.5 million in over 2,000 theaters, putting it just $26 million away from surpassing <\/span>Avatar <\/span><\/i>to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Earlier this year we saw <\/span>Captain Marvel <\/span><\/i>gain a significant bump in the box office as a partner to the release of <\/span>Endgame<\/span><\/i>, so Disney is probably hoping the same can happen for <\/span>Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/span><\/i>, an MCU film made by Sony.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ouch. <\/span>Child\u2019s Play <\/span><\/i>(United Artists) fell six spots to #8 in its second weekend, making just $4.2 million in over 3,000 theaters. The horror reboot is by no means a flop thanks to its low reported budget of $10 million (it\u2019s grossed $23 million domestically so far), but it will likely fall off the Top 10 by next week.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rocketman <\/span><\/i>(Paramount) dropped three spots to #9, making $3.8 million domestically in over 2,000 theaters. After five weeks at the box office, the R-rated Elton John biopic has been a modest hit relative to its budget, making $165.5 million worldwide against a reported budget of $40 million.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last, we have <\/span>John Wick: Chapter 3<\/span><\/i> (Lionsgate), which fell three spots to #10 with $3.1 million domestically in over 1,500 theaters. After seven weeks at the box office, John Wick<\/em> has endured long enough to gross $303.6 million worldwide, making it a solid hit for an R-rated film and one of the highest grossers of the summer.<\/span><\/p>\n

And They\u2019re Out<\/span><\/h2>\n

Godzilla: King of the Monsters <\/span><\/i>(Warner Bros) dropped three spots to #11, winding down a solid five-week run that has made it the 9th highest-grossing film in 2019 worldwide with $376.9 million.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dark Phoenix <\/span><\/i>(Fox) dropped three spots to #13, now at $244.6 million worldwide after a month at the box office. That means the final film in the long-running <\/span>X-Men <\/span><\/i>franchise will likely be the lowest-grossing one, depending on what happens with <\/span>New Mutants <\/span><\/i>next year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Anna <\/span><\/i>(Lionsgate) dropped five spots to #14 in its second week. It only made $1.4 million domestically in over 2,100 theaters, as well as $7.5 million worldwide to date. Because of its reported budget of $30 million, <\/span>Anna <\/span><\/i>will likely be one of the summer\u2019s most notable flops.<\/span><\/p>\n
