In an interview with Comicbook.com, Feige explained why Tom Holland’s new Spidey movie is the true finale to the Infinity Saga:

“We’ve been working for many years on Infinity War and Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home,” Feige said. “Those were the films that were culminating the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU. And as we were working on Endgame, we realized that the true end of the entire Infinity Saga, the final film of Phase 3, had to be Spider-Man: Far From Home, because — spoiler — we lose Tony Stark at the end of Endgame.”

While Far From Home has considerably less scale and Avengers-lead epic battles on its roster, Feige says it does re-focus the MCU on what audiences have invested in the most since 2008: The characters:

“The relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is so special over the five films that Tom Holland has portrayed Spider-Man in the MCU, that we needed to see where his journey went — and see how does Spider-Man step out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark — and become the true hero that he was always meant to be. And it’s for that reason that Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home are essentially two pieces of the same story, and it’s not over yet until Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Other than Feige saying the title of the new Spider-Man movie A LOT, the key stakeholder in why it exists at all makes a convincing point. As satisfying as Endgame was as an ending, Far From Home serves as an epilogue of sorts in that it wraps up Peter Parker’s Infinity Saga storyline in the wake of Tony’s death. Think of it this way: Far From Home is like the Toy Story 4 to Endgame‘s Toy Story 3.

And we can’t think of a better triple feature than re-watching Infinity War and Endgame (now with new footage and extra bits!) before seeing Spider-Man’s new movie.

Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters July 2.

You’d think Avengers: Endgame would be the final chapter in Marvel’s Phase Three of the Cinematic Universe, but you’d be wrong.
