You’d think\u00a0Avengers: Endgame<\/em><\/a> would be the final chapter in Marvel’s Phase Three of the Cinematic Universe, but you’d be wrong.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em><\/a> will end the current phase of the MCU and, according to Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, that’s by design. In an interview with Comicbook.com<\/a>, Feige explained why Tom Holland’s new Spidey movie is the true finale to the Infinity Saga:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been working for many years on\u00a0Infinity War<\/em> and\u00a0Endgame\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>,\u201d Feige said. \u201cThose were the films that were culminating the entire Infinity Saga of the MCU. And as we were working on Endgame<\/em>, we realized that the true end of the entire Infinity Saga, the final film of Phase 3, had to be Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>, because — spoiler — we lose Tony Stark at the end of Endgame<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Far From Home<\/em> has considerably less scale and Avengers-lead epic battles on its roster, Feige says it does re-focus the MCU on what audiences have invested in the most since 2008: The characters:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relationship between Peter Parker and Tony Stark is so special over the five films that\u00a0Tom Holland\u00a0has portrayed Spider-Man in the MCU, that we needed to see where his journey went — and see how does Spider-Man step out of the shadow of his mentor, Tony Stark — and become the true hero that he was always meant to be. And it\u2019s for that reason that Endgame<\/em> and Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> are essentially two pieces of the same story, and it\u2019s not over yet until Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Other than Feige saying the title of the new Spider-Man movie A LOT, the key stakeholder in why it exists at all makes a convincing point. As satisfying as\u00a0Endgame<\/em> was as an ending,\u00a0Far From Home<\/em> serves as an epilogue of sorts in that it wraps up Peter Parker’s Infinity Saga storyline in the wake of Tony’s death. Think of it this way:\u00a0Far From Home<\/em> is like the\u00a0Toy Story 4<\/em> to\u00a0Endgame<\/em>‘s\u00a0Toy Story 3<\/em>.<\/p>\n

And we can’t think of a better triple feature than re-watching\u00a0Infinity War<\/em> and\u00a0Endgame<\/em> (now with new footage and extra bits!<\/a>) before seeing Spider-Man’s new movie.<\/p>\n

Spider-Man: Far From Home<\/em> hits theaters July 2.<\/p>\n
