I was this half-black, half-Samoan, 6-foot-4, 275-pound pro wrestler,\u201d he told the packed crowd. \u201cYou know, I was told at that time, \u2018You\u2019ve got to be a certain way. You\u2019ve got to drop some weight\u2026 You\u2019ve got to stop working out.\u2019 Stop doing the things that I love. \u2018You\u2019ve got to stop calling yourself The Rock\u2019\u2026 And for years, I actually bought into it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, the <em>Jumanji <\/em>star quickly felt miserable doing that and listening to everyone but his gut. So, Johnson pushed back. He decided that he wasn&#8217;t going to conform to Hollywood, \u201cHollywood was going to conform to me [&#8230;]\u00a0 and here I am with all of you getting the Generation Award\u2026 It\u2019s important that you are your most authentic self. I\u2019m a walking example of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Johnson concluded his five-minute-plus speech with one helluva final line &#8212; a quote he first heard when he was 15 years old.
