The biopic&#8217;s announcement comes a few days before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/rocketman\/280677\"><em>Rocketman<\/em><\/a>, the musical about Elton John, hits theaters Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Gervasi&#8217;s untitled movie will reportedly center on George growing up in an Irish working-class family, and then follow his rise as a Grammy-winning artist who topped the charts in the 1980s with his band, Culture Club. &#8220;The larger-than-life George never disguised who he was,&#8221; according to a press release for the film. &#8220;[He was] a fearless, ruthlessly honest young man with an open identity who was years ahead of his time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no filmmaker better suited than Sacha Gervasi to tell George\u2019s confessional story with the irreverence and emotion it deserves,\u201d said Jonathan Glickman, MGM\u2019s Motion Picture Group President. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t be more thrilled to be working with both of them to bring this remarkably honest and wildly entertaining tale to audiences around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hollywood is doubling-down on biopics about popular musicians in the wake of\u00a0<em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em>&#8216;s success. The Oscar-winning film over-performed at the box office, raking in over $900 million worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Boy George is MGM&#8217;s second high-profile musical biopic in development.
