Three of them, actually.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/kateaurthur\/new-star-wars-movie-knights-of-the-old-republic?bftwnews&amp;utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc\">BuzzFeed News<\/a>, Lucasfilm has a new trilogy of films based on the super-popular 2003 video game in development from screenwriter\u00a0Laeta Kalogridis (<em>Alita: Battle Angel<\/em>). Three separate, well-placed sources confirmed the news for BuzzFeed.<\/p>\n<p>The news of this new trilogy of\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> films comes soon after Bob Iger confirmed that\u00a0<em>Game of Thrones<\/em> showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will be writing a different trilogy for Disney. Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy confirmed to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MTVNEWS\/status\/1118270840989192192\">MTV News<\/a>\u00a0at Star Wars Celebration in April that a <em>Knights of the Old Republic<\/em>\u00a0was being looked at.<\/p>\n<p>Weiss and Benioff&#8217;s first chapter in this new series <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movie-news\/disney-sets-new-star-wars-trilogy-release-dates-bumps-avatar-2-again\/\">is slated for release in 2022<\/a>.\u00a0Presumably, Kalogridis&#8217; first <em>Old Republic<\/em> installment will be released sometime after that, as BuzzFeed reports that\u00a0\u201cKalogridis is close to finishing the first script&#8221; for this potential trilogy.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Old Republic<\/em> game carved a significant amount of care space for fans, as it told the action-packed, epic story that takes place 4,000 years before the events of\u00a0<em>A New Hope<\/em>. It centers on a Sith Lord, Darth Malak, and a cunning Jedi Knight by the name of\u00a0Bastila Shan. Bringing this corner of the Star Wars Universe to the big screen &#8212; something fans haven&#8217;t really seen before from Lucasfilm &#8212; could be the creative shot in the arm the franchise needs as Lucasfilm plans to wrap up the current saga with December&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atomtickets.com\/movies\/star-wars-the-rise-of-skywalker\/249997\"><em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em><\/a>. Director J.J. Abrams&#8217; trilogy capper will conclude the Skywalker storyline, which started with the 1977 original <em>Star Wars<\/em>, reached back with the three George Lucas-directed prequels, and continued with\u00a0<em>The Force Awakens<\/em> and\u00a0<em>The Last Jedi<\/em>. That&#8217;s nine movies total about a farm boy who grew up to be a Jedi. It&#8217;s time for something new from the house that Luke built.<\/p>\n<p>Kalogridis is a formidable sci-fi screenwriter who makes world-building look effortless in her scripts.
